As a Principal Engineer – Appian Platform, you will serve as a senior technical authority for enterprise applications built on the Appian low-code automation platform. This is a hands-on individual contributor role responsible for solution architecture, engineering standards, complex development, platform optimization, and technical leadership across multiple Appian initiatives.

You will lead complex, multi-team solutions from architecture and design through implementation and production support, while remaining hands-on with Appian development, integration, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.

Key Deliverables (Duties and Responsibilities)

  • Own end-to-end solution architecture and technical design for complex enterprise Appian applications.

  • Lead technical execution across multiple Appian workstreams, including application architecture, data models, process models, integrations, security, and deployment patterns.

  • Remain hands-on in Appian development, building and reviewing complex SAIL interfaces, process models, records, data fabric solutions, integrations, APIs, connected systems, plug-ins, and reusable components.

  • Establish and enforce enterprise Appian engineering standards, design patterns, naming conventions, reusable components, and development best practices.

  • Design scalable and resilient solutions covering high-volume processing, asynchronous patterns, exception handling, transaction management, and performance optimization.

  • Lead performance engineering and production troubleshooting, including Health Check remediation, query/process optimization, memory management, capacity planning, and root-cause analysis.

  • Define integration architecture using REST/SOAP APIs, web APIs, connected systems, integration objects, messaging, and enterprise integration patterns.

  • Provide technical leadership for Appian Data Fabric, Records, Process Automation, Case Management, RPA, AI/GenAI capabilities, and Document Automation, where applicable.

  • Own technical standards for Appian security, including roles/groups, object security, data access, authentication/SSO integration, and secure development practices.

  • Lead Appian DevSecOps and release engineering, including CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, application packaging, environment promotion, and release governance.

  • Conduct architecture, design, and code reviews and provide technical direction to senior engineers and developers.

  • Mentor Appian engineers toward advanced certification and engineering best practices while remaining an individual contributor.

  • Partner with business stakeholders, product owners, Enterprise Architecture, Security, Risk, and engineering teams to translate complex requirements into scalable Appian solutions.

  • Evaluate new Appian platform capabilities and provide recommendations on architecture, adoption, reusable patterns, and enterprise roadmap.

  • Support critical production issues and provide technical leadership for complex problem resolution.

  • Deep understanding of Appian architecture, design patterns, performance engineering, Health Check analysis, process optimization, query performance, and production troubleshooting.

  • Strong experience designing enterprise integrations using REST/SOAP APIs, web services, authentication patterns, and integration middleware.

  • Strong experience with relational databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL/PostgreSQL, including SQL optimization and data modeling.

  • Strong understanding of Appian security architecture, object security, user/group management, SSO/authentication, and enterprise security standards.

  • Experience with Appian DevSecOps, CI/CD, deployment automation, application packaging, environment management, and release governance.

  • Demonstrated experience architecting and delivering high-volume, business-critical Appian applications across multiple environments.

  • Experience establishing development standards, reusable architecture patterns, conducting architecture/design/code reviews, and mentoring senior engineers.

  • Strong understanding of workflow/BPM, case management, business rules, process orchestration, and enterprise automation architecture.

  • Proven ability to operate as a technical lead across multiple teams without direct people-management responsibility.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate architecture and technical decisions to both engineering teams and senior stakeholders.

  • Appian Certified Lead Developer – Required

  • Current/active Appian certification expected.

  • Additional advanced Appian certifications and demonstrated Appian platform expertise are strongly preferred.

  • Candidates should demonstrate continued knowledge of current Appian platform capabilities, architecture patterns, and engineering best practices.
