The principal scientist is a technical expert who acts as a first point of contact for the resolution of complex technical issues encountered throughout Global Supply Chain. Recognized as an industry expert, they leverage their broad technical knowledge of spirits manufacturing to anticipate internal and external business challenges. They conceive and lead long term research platforms and contribute to the development of functional strategy. They lead the technical development of breakthrough cost savings initiatives and keep abreast of upcoming technical trends.

  • Plans and conducts highly complex research to solve technical issues that have direct impact on the cost of operations and / or the product quality.

  • Utilizes a data driven approach in all aspects of work: solving problems, challenging assumptions, deriving technical insights and demonstrating business impact.

  • Leverages own and others in depth expertise along with broad awareness of business issues to anticipate internal and external business challenges.

  • Develops technical strategy, evaluates the patentability of research findings, and establishes best practices.

  • Builds partnerships with business units across the global organization.

  • Builds consensus for the goals and priorities within the technical area of responsibility while influencing and securing resources for driving technical initiatives forward

  • Builds relationships with experts outside the organization. Stays abreast of developments and contributes to the technical community and evaluates the potential business impact of new emerging technologies. 

  • Acts as a technical resource to colleagues throughout the organization by educating and coaching others.

  • Plans, coordinates, and implements research programs in accordance with Brown-Forman Global Production strategy, policy and procedures

  • Routinely communicates complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media

  • Leads and contributes to patent writing proposals

What You Bring to the Table

  • PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or related field

  • Minimum of 10+ years work experience, with 7+ years in the beverage alcohol manufacturing industry

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Proven ability to lead and manage research projects.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills. Able to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of groups.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

  • Project leadership experience inside and outside discipline

  • Experience managing complex research projects

  • Evidence of the ability to collaborate externally to complete research projects and advance thinking.
