Who we are

We are an organisation that exists to drive progress. That's the “red thread” that connects everyone at The Economist Group (TEG). Our businesses share a devotion to innovation, independence and rigour in their fields of expertise. We empower people to understand and tackle the critical challenges and changes facing the world. Our analytical rigour, global expertise and evidence-based insights enable individuals and organisations to make sense of these shifts and chart a course through them.

We deliver analysis and insights in many formats to subscribers and clients in 170 countries through our four businesses, The Economist, Economist Impact, Economist Intelligence and Economist Education, which uphold our global reputation for excellence and integrity.

Our mobile apps are a primary way subscribers experience The Economist. They are central to engagement, habit formation and long-term value.

We are seeking an experienced Principal Product Manager to own the core app platform - the foundations, experiences and operational excellence that underpin our flagship mobile apps.

The role

The Principal Product Manager for Mobile will own the vision and roadmap for The Economist’s flagship apps, combining platform responsibilities with ownership of key reader-facing experiences.

On the platform side, this role owns backend-for-frontend capabilities, shared services such as saved story syncing, and core infrastructure that other teams rely on. On the product side, you will lead the reading experience, including Home, the Weekly edition and personalised “For You” surfaces.

This also includes responsibility for app health, core KPIs, SDKs, push notifications and acting as the central point of contact for all app-related product work.

You will work closely with the Personalisation team, who define the algorithms and signals, while your team is responsible for how personalisation is realised in the front-end experience.

This role reports to the VP, Engagement, working closely with the Core Platforms Group Product Manager.

  • Be accountable for app engagement KPIs, stability and performance
  • Own SDK strategy, platform dependencies and technical health
  • Lead development of Home, Weekly and core reading flows

  • Be accountable for app engagement KPIs, stability, performance and operational excellence
  • Define standards for native app quality, accessibility and best practice
  • Oversee push notification mechanics (triggering and segmentation) and coordination
  • Act as the central product contact for all app initiatives

Who you are

  • Deep experience building and operating native mobile apps (iOS & Android)
  • Strong platform mindset combined with user experience ownership
  • Strong technical judgement and confidence working with engineers
  • Confidence working with complex backend and frontend systems
  • Ability to partner effectively with data science and personalisation teams
  • Clear communicator and strong cross-team collaborator

Domain knowledge

  • Native mobile ecosystems, performance and release cycles
  • SDKs, analytics, Push Notifications and mobile engagement mechanics
