Role Summary

We’re looking for a senior engineering leader to shape how AI tools are introduced, adopted, and experienced across engineering and to help elevate the end-to-end engineering experience across the Group.

Sitting within the AI Powered Engineering (AIPE) team, this role focuses on designing the end-to-end experience of AI-enabled software development—from code authoring and review through to deployment and operations. This role is accountable for the holistic design of Engineering tooling, SDLC workflows, AI Powered Engineering (AIPE) interactions, and Platform as Product experiences.

You will shape how engineers experience internal platforms and AI-enabled workflows—ensuring they are usable, coherent, scalable, and aligned to engineering standards and business outcomes.

This is not a feature-level design role. It is a systems design leadership role, responsible for defining experience strategy, interaction models, usability principles, and adoption frameworks across a complex internal ecosystem. This role will work with dedicated Product Owners across AI Powered Engineering, Engineering Practice, Engineering Tooling and Infrastructure teams to map end-to-end experience.

Role Purpose

To design and continuously improve the end-to-end Engineering Experience by:

  • Creating a unified experience vision across AIPE, SDLC, developer tooling and platform surfaces
  • Reducing cognitive load and workflow friction for engineers
  • Embedding usability and human-centred design into engineering enablement strategy
  • Ensuring Platform as Product principles are reflected in how internal platforms are experienced and adopted
Core Accountabilities1. Experience Strategy & Vision
  • Define the long-term experience vision for Engineering tooling, SDLC workflows and AI-enabled development
  • Establish design principles and interaction standards across internal platforms
  • Ensure coherence across AI Powered Engineering tooling, LLM gateway workflows, Project Coral, CI/CD, observability and platform tooling
  • Translate engineering enablement strategy into a clear experience blueprint
2. Systems & Workflow Design
  • Design end-to-end workflows across:
    • AI-assisted authoring and review
    • Agentic development patterns
    • Code review and SDLC gates
    • Platform onboarding and adoption journeys
  • Identify friction points in current engineering workflows and prioritise improvements based on measurable impact
  • Partner with Engineering Insights to validate design decisions through behavioural and productivity data
3. Research & Insight
  • Lead qualitative and quantitative research with engineers to:
    • Understand adoption barriers
    • Identify usability gaps
    • Assess trust and transparency in AI-enabled workflows
  • Synthesize research into actionable design direction and prioritised roadmaps
  • Ensure internal documentation, knowledge bases, and developer portals are designed to be intuitive and AI-accessible
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with:

  • AI Powered Engineering Crew
  • Platform as Product leads
  • Developer Experience & SDLC teams
  • Tooling Product Managers
  • Engineering leaders and Distinguished Engineers
5. Adoption & Value Realisation
  • Define experience success metrics in partnership with Technical Product Owners in AI Powered Engineering (e.g., adoption rates, workflow completion time, reduced review friction, improved satisfaction)
  • Drive consistency in design patterns across AI powered capabilities to support discoverability and ease of use
Skills & Experience
  • Extensive experience as a Principal Designer in complex platform or tooling environments
  • Strong systems-thinking capability and experience designing internal developer platforms or enterprise tooling
  • Deep understanding of:
    • Developer workflows
    • AI-enabled tooling interactions
    • Platform product models
  • Demonstrated ability to define experience vision across multiple product surfaces
  • Strong research leadership and synthesis capability
  • Ability to influence senior engineering and product stakeholders
  • Experience working in high-complexity, ambiguous enterprise environments
