JOB OVERVIEW
Wellington Management is investing heavily in expanding its Private Investments platform, which is one of the firm’s fastest-growing and most strategic areas. We are seeking a senior-level Principal Developer to play a critical role in building the technology foundation that will support this growth.
This is a unique opportunity to operate at the center of the private investments ecosystem. Unlike many roles that focus on a single function, this position works across the full platform partnering with Investment teams, Fund Control & Operations, Valuation, Legal, Compliance, and Reporting to deliver integrated, end-to-end solutions.
You will serve as a hands-on technical leader and architect, shaping platforms that support the full private investment lifecycle from deal sourcing and execution to portfolio management and operational processes while helping define the next generation of scalable, data-driven investment infrastructure.
In addition, you will play a key role in advancing the firm’s use of AI both to enhance engineering productivity and to enable investment and operations teams to work more efficiently and make better decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Engineering Leadership
- Act as a senior technical leader and hands-on architect across private investment platforms
- Design and deliver scalable, high-quality systems supporting lifecycle workflows and data integration
- Lead modernization of existing platforms into modular, service-oriented architectures
- Establish and enforce strong engineering standards, SDLC practices, and system observability
Delivery & Execution
- Lead end-to-end delivery of strategic initiatives, from design through production
- Partner with business stakeholders to translate complex investment workflows into technical solutions
- Provide technical mentorship through design and code reviews, elevating engineering quality
AI Enablement & Productivity
- Drive adoption of AI-assisted development practices (code generation, testing, deployment automation)
- Partner with Investment and Operations teams to identify and implement AI-driven productivity improvements
- Demonstrate and evangelize AI tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT) to improve research, workflows, and reporting
- Prototype and embed AI-enabled capabilities into day-to-day business processes
- Act as a change agent to drive adoption of AI across both technical and non-technical teams
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience building and supporting complex, business-critical systems
- Strong hands-on development experience (Java, Python, or similar)
- Expertise in distributed systems, APIs, and modern architecture patterns
- Experience with messaging/streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS)
- Strong understanding of data integration, system scalability, and production observability
- Experience in financial services; exposure to private markets or investment platforms preferred
AI & Innovation
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, LLM-based tools)
- Understanding of how AI can improve both engineering productivity and business workflows
- Proven ability to introduce new technologies and drive adoption across teams

Our approach to compensation considers all aspects of total compensation; all employees are eligible to receive salary, variable compensation, and benefits. The base salary range for this position is:
USD 120,000 - 225,000This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered when making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets; role; skills and experience; certifications; and education. This range is an estimate, and further details on salary and total compensation aspects will be shared with candidates during the recruitment process.
Base salary is only one component of Wellington’s total compensation approach. Other rewards may include a discretionary Corporate Bonus and/ or Incentives, if eligible.
