Summary Generated by Built In

Build the in-house mobile engineering capability behind Fieldpiece’s connected products.

Fieldpiece is looking for an experienced Principal Mobile Architect to become our first in-house mobile engineering hire and lead the technical architecture and development of our native iOS and Android solutions.  You’ll work closely with external teams while establishing stronger internal technical ownership.  You’ll define the mobile architecture and technical strategy while remaining hands-on—developing critical components, solving complex engineering problems, and setting the technical foundation for our future internal mobile team.  Our mobile applications sit at the center of a connected ecosystem spanning mobile, Bluetooth/BLE-enabled tools and sensors, cloud services, APIs, data platforms, and SaaS/DaaS capabilities.

Fieldpiece is a privately held, global leader in professional HVACR tools and test instruments. We're known for developing innovative products that technicians rely on every day - and for investing in our people, our technology, and our future. Named one of the Best Places to Work in Southern California for four consecutive years, we're looking for talented people who want to make an impact while growing their careers.

This position can be in our Orange, CA office (moving to Tustin, CA in 2028) or Park City, UT office (moving to Heber City, UT in 2027).  We offer a hybrid work schedule with a typical 3 days/week onsite.  Additional onsite days may be required for team collaboration, planning sessions, or other business needs. Travel is expected to be up to 10%.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the architecture and technical direction for our native iOS and Android applications.
  • Establish and build in-house mobile engineering capabilities.
  • Architect and develop solutions connecting mobile apps with Bluetooth/BLE devices, cloud services, APIs, and data platforms while providing hands-on development and solving complex technical problems.
  • Establish mobile architecture standards, coding practices, development frameworks, technical guardrails, and lead design and code reviews.
  • Make key technical decisions balancing scalability, performance, security, maintainability, and speed.
  • Partner with Product, UX, embedded, cloud, and data teams to deliver integrated connected-product experiences.
  • Apply AI-assisted development tools and practices to improve development, testing, debugging, and code quality.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • 8+ years of software development experience with at least 2+ years as a technical leader architecting and building complex, production-grade native iOS and Android mobile applications.
  • Strong experience with Swift/Objective-C and/or Kotlin/Java.
  • Experience with AWS, cloud architecture, SaaS/DaaS, and data platforms.
  • Expertise with Bluetooth/BLE, IoT, connected devices, sensors, or hardware products.
  • Experience integrating mobile applications with APIs, cloud services, backend platforms, and distributed systems.
  • Strong knowledge of mobile architecture, security, performance, data synchronization, testing, mobile CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and release management.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical decisions across teams – internally and externally.

Even Better If You Have

  • Large-scale applications or complex device/cloud integrations.
  • Using AI-assisted or agentic development tools to improve engineering productivity.
  • Experience with HVACR, IoT, connected products, or field-service technology

Why You'll Enjoy Working at Fieldpiece

  • As a privately held company, we invest for the long term—in our people, our products, and our future. That means we can focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and building lasting careers rather than chasing short-term results.
