Principal Mechanical System Engineer
Job Summary:
The Principal Mechanical System Engineer will lead our efforts to track product vision, innovation, enhancements, and improvements, focusing on next generation products and features. This position includes working with all levels of management, engineering, and other departments to create and select next generation technologies and products. This position is full-time and exempt. Some travel is required. Location of this position is in Chandler, AZ.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- The Principal Mechanical System Engineer is the thought leader on mechanical, structural, and civil engineering product improvements, technology vision, and roadmaps.
- Owns the final recommendations on mechanical aspects of innovation concepts.
- Independently, identify, own, and solve issues related to all duties.
- Responsible for ensuring that product evolution and innovation meet customer needs and are in sync with market trends.
- Is an expert on industry trends relating to mechanical aspects of photovoltaic tracking products.
- Is the expert on industry trends relating to mechanical, structural, and civil engineering materials, techniques, manufacturing methods, use of industry tools, and other areas related to technology state of the art.
- Responsible for roadmap creation that is in sync with market needs and remains ahead of the market trends and competition.
- Responsible to create concepts and preliminary designs for new product improvements.
- Responsible for analyzing and vetting product concepts for customer needs, ease of installation, business cases, manufacturability, reliability, and safety.
- Lead design review process and approve critical design decisions.
- Obtain components/supplies/equipment to support prototype assembly and conduct preliminary OEM vendor assessment/selection.
- Experiment with and analyze different materials, techniques, manufacturing processes, design tolerances, and other factors in the developmental process.
- Fabricate and test new designs.
- Select the best product innovation and concept designs to bring into the product line.
- Provide technical leadership for key engineering projects.
- Provide regular updates to management.
- Work cross-functionally with other engineering teams and company departments to achieve company goals.
- Create and maintain necessary documentation for program success.
- Perform competitive analyses.
- Participate in voice of customer sessions and present new product ideas to customer for feedback.
- Work with customer facing departments to ensure that customer feedback and experience is accounted for in product improvements.
Qualifications:
- Design experience with structural components and hardware, gearing, and/or drivetrains required.
- Design experience with structural components applied with civil engineering experience and wind loading highly desired.
- Design skills such as FEA, DFA, DFM, design for cost, a plus.
- Design experience with SolidWorks required.
- Experience with SolidWorks EPDM a plus.
- Experience with FMEA required.
- Product development experience preferred.
- Must be able to thoroughly and accurately document design intent, analysis results, test results, etc., in written form.
- Knowledge of and experience with electromechanical production machinery required.
- Experience in the solar industry a plus.
- Experience in Utility Scale PV Plant design and construction a plus.
- Professional Engineering Certification preferred.
- Metal/Steel fabrication background preferred.
- Know how the application of design for reliability a plus.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project.
- Strong computer skills required include spreadsheets, presentations, 3D CAD and ERP.
- Experience with Stage Gate Product Development Processes a plus.
- Must have good organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Must communicate effectively with engineers, drafters, and others within the company as needed.
- Must work well within a team.
- Must work independently to reach goals with little or no supervision.
- Experience working in a matrixed environment, interfacing with high-level internal and external leadership a plus.
- Must be able to define and set up tests and run experiments quickly.
Preferred qualifications:
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years relevant experience.
