The Role
Leads end-to-end hardware design and validation for single- and three-phase smart electricity meters. Responsibilities include metrology circuits, power supplies, schematic and multilayer PCB design, component selection, DFM/DFT, bring-up, debugging, characterization, regulatory testing, and EVT/DVT/PVT production support. Collaborates with firmware, software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, certification, and manufacturing partners while developing test fixtures and validation systems.
Summary Generated by Built In
We are looking for a Lead/Principal Hardware Engineer with strong hands-on
experience in smart electricity meter hardware design and development.
The role will involve owning the end-to-end hardware design and validation of
single-phase and three-phase electricity meters, including Whole Current (WC),
Low-Tension Current Transformer (LTCT), and High-Tension Current Transformer
(HTCT) variants.
The successful candidate will be responsible for schematic design, multi-layer PCB
design, metrology circuits, power supplies, hardware bring-up, debugging,
validation, and supporting EVT/DVT/PVT builds through production.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of metering hardware based on energy measurement AFE/ICs, for single-phase and three-phase applications.
- Design current-sensing front ends appropriate for WC, LTCT, and HTCT
meter variants using shunts, current transformers (CTs), and Rogowski
coils, as applicable.
- Perform schematic capture and multi-layer PCB design using Altium
Designer and/or Cadence OrCAD/Allegro, Mentor PADS, or KiCad.
- Own component selection, BOM development, PCB stack-up definition,
design-for-manufacturing (DFM), and design-for-test (DFT) activities.
- Design and validate metering power supplies, including SMPS and/or
capacitive dropper power supplies, as applicable to the product architecture.
- Implement surge, ESD, EFT, and other protection mechanisms required for
reliable meter operation and regulatory compliance.
- Lead hardware bring-up, debugging, characterization, and validation.
activities from prototype through production.Plan and execute EVT, DVT,
and PVT builds in collaboration with EMS/CM partners.
- Define and support the development of production jigs, fixtures,
automated/manual test stations, and hardware validation setups.
- Work closely with firmware, software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality,
and certification teams to resolve hardware and system-level issues.
- Support regulatory and certification testing, including accuracy, type testing,
EMC/immunity, surge, ESD, and environmental qualification.
Required Qualifications
- B.E./B.Tech/M.E./M.Tech in Electronics Communication Engineering
(ECE), Electrical Electronics Engineering (EEE), or a related discipline.
- 6+ years of relevant experience in electronics hardware design, preferably
with significant experience in smart electricity meters or metering
equipment.
- Demonstrated experience taking hardware products through the complete
development lifecycle, from architecture and schematic design through PCB
development, prototype bring-up, validation, certification, and production.
Skills Required
- B.E., B.Tech, M.E., or M.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline
- 6+ years of relevant electronics hardware design experience
- Significant experience with smart electricity meters or metering equipment
- Experience taking hardware products through architecture, schematic design, PCB development, prototype bring-up, validation, certification, and production
