About the Role
The Principal FPGA Engineer is the senior technical authority for FPGA and hardware-accelerated trading platform technologies within Equities Trading Technology.
The role is responsible for the design, development and evolution of FPGA-based solutions supporting market connectivity, market data processing, protocol acceleration, latency-sensitive workflows and specialised trading infrastructure.
Acting as a trusted advisor to engineering, architecture and product teams, the Principal FPGA Engineer drives technical strategy, establishes engineering standards and ensures ASX maintains deep capability in deterministic, high-performance computing technologies critical to modern trading platforms.
This is a highly specialised engineering position requiring exceptional technical expertise, industry experience and the ability to influence technology direction across multiple initiatives.

The Equities Trading Technology team delivers trusted, resilient and high-performance platforms that support Australia's equities and options markets.
The team works across software engineering, market infrastructure, product development, quality engineering and operational support disciplines to provide secure, resilient and scalable market services.
The Principal FPGA Engineer provides specialist expertise across these domains where deterministic performance, hardware acceleration and latency optimisation are critical success factors.

What You'll Do
FPGA Architecture & Design
Design and develop FPGA-based solutions supporting trading platform services.
Define architectures for hardware-accelerated processing and market data handling.
Lead design reviews and technical governance for FPGA initiatives.
Establish reusable design patterns, frameworks and engineering standards.
Drive continuous improvement of FPGA engineering practices.
Trading Platform Performance Engineering
Analyse latency-sensitive workflows and identify opportunities for acceleration.
Evaluate protocol processing, market data distribution and connectivity architectures.
Optimise deterministic processing paths across hardware and software components.
Conduct performance benchmarking and capacity analysis.
Strategic Technical Leadership
Act as the subject matter expert for FPGA and hardware acceleration technologies.
Provide technical advice to Product, Architecture, Operations and Engineering stakeholders.
Influence technology roadmaps and strategic investment decisions.
Assess emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to exchange technology.
Engineering Excellence
Define engineering standards, design principles and quality expectations.
Participate in solution architecture reviews and engineering assurance activities.
Guide teams in applying rigorous engineering discipline to low-latency systems.
Support production readiness, resilience and operational supportability practices.
Specialist Collaboration
Partner with software engineering teams to integrate FPGA capabilities into broader platform architectures.
Work with network, infrastructure and operations teams to optimise end-to-end performance.
Collaborate with vendors and external partners where specialist expertise is required.
Contribute to industry forums and technology communities where appropriate.

Experience & Qualifications
Must Have
Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics or related discipline.
10+ years engineering experience in FPGA development or low-latency platform engineering.
Extensive experience designing and deploying FPGA solutions in production environments.
Proven experience leading complex technical initiatives and influencing architecture decisions.
Strong understanding of high-performance computing and distributed systems.
Specialist Technical Expertise
Deep expertise in several of the following:
FPGA design and implementation.
Hardware description languages (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog).
High-speed networking technologies.
Low-latency market infrastructure.
Protocol processing and acceleration.
Real-time and deterministic systems.
Performance engineering and benchmarking.
High-performance networking.
Linux environments and systems programming.
Hardware/software co-design.
