The Role
Lead enterprise web and experience-layer architecture for GWAM: define web shell, micro-frontend composition, BFF patterns, experience APIs, accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), security (OAuth2/OIDC, CIAM, cookies/CORS), and Agentic AI integration. Drive platform vision, publish reference architectures and guardrails, govern reuse and convergence, influence stakeholders, and mentor technologists to deliver secure, scalable digital experiences across channels and regions.
Summary Generated by Built In

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Principal Enterprise Architect to join Manulife’s Global Wealth and Asset Management Enterprise Architecture team.

This role will push forward GWAM’s enterprise web and experience layer platform strategy, defining how digital channels scale securely and consistently across the firm. You will establish the architectural guidance and platform mechanisms that enable the organization to think firm wide when designing web experiences, micro frontends, backend for frontend (BFF) patterns, and AI augmented user journeys.

You will work closely with business, product, and technology partners to translate long term objectives into platform architectures that drive reuse, convergence, accessibility, and speed across regions and channels.

As a Principal Enterprise Architect, you will drive the architecture strategy and guidance for the enterprise web shell, micro frontend composition model, experience layer APIs, and Agentic AI integration patterns. You will partner with technologists across the firm to define the target state architecture that enables a truly digital first, platform driven culture.

Our Manulife / John Hancock family is going through an exciting, yet challenging metamorphosis. We are transforming from a wise 130-year-old company into an agile 130-year-young company. This is a journey, and to quote T.S. Elliot; “The journey, Not the destination matters...”. On this journey, we expect all to bring their knowledge, skills and experience as a team and, when we don’t know, we will learn.

Within the Manulife family, our team is within Global Wealth and Asset Management (GWAM) and as a Segment we believe the truth is in the numbers. We believe it’s time to change the investment game. To do it differently by focusing on the value we bring our clients, rather than on the usual topics of performance and fees. We have just surpassed $1 trillion in assets under management with a diverse range of both public and private asset classes. Our division is global and have operations in North America, Asia and Europe and we serve a diverse range of clients from our own on-balance general account assets to institutional, retail and wealth.

The right individual will be a proactive, self-starter that enjoys and thrives when connecting people and technology to solve complex problems at-scale. If you have a passion and skill for long-term end-to-end thinking balanced with architecture and solutioning that enable value for customers now, this opportunity is for you!

We are an organization that values diverse and big thinking, rewards both behaviors and delivery, and focuses on growth and continuous improvement – all in support of Manulife’s mission to help clients and one another succeed. This role is a unique opportunity to join a team and company at the beginning of a multi-year platform transformation whose work will have direct impact on company direction, our customers, and our industry.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Owning enterprise scale web platform architecture across multiple secure portals, personas, and regulatory domains
  • Defining and governing web shell architectures that provide consistent navigation, identity integration, accessibility, and shared capabilities
  • Designing and operationalizing micro frontend architectures, including module federation, runtime composition, isolation, and versioning strategies
  • Establishing Backend for Frontend (BFF) patterns that secure browser interactions and protect tokens
  • Designing experience layer and mediation patterns that normalize APIs, identity, terminology, and business rules
  • Engineering WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility by design at the shell and platform level across distributed teams
  • Embedding Agentic AI capabilities into web experiences, such as AI assisted navigation, personalization, and workflow augmentation
  • Creating channel aware architectures that differentiate advisor web, customer web, and mobile usage patterns
  • Driving long term platform vision and roadmaps while delivering incremental architecture that enables value today
  • Publishing reference architectures, standards, and guardrails that enable reuse and convergence
  • Leading architecture forums and presenting complex ideas to senior technology and business leaders
  • Mentoring and growing technologists across platform, product, and architecture teams

Required Qualifications:

  • Deep experience with modern web platforms, including React‑based ecosystems and micro‑frontend delivery models
  • Strong hands‑on knowledge of OAuth2 / OIDC, CIAM, multi‑realm federation, and delegated (act‑on‑behalf) authorization
  • Practical expertise in domain, cookie, and browser security architecture, including SameSite policies and CORS
  • Experience implementing and operating BFFs using HTTP Only cookies and secure session handling
  • Proven ability to operate in advisor and customer authorization models, including entitlements, auditability, and compliance constraints
  • Exposure to Agentic AI or AI‑assisted systems integrated into customer‑ or advisor‑facing platforms
  • Strong understanding of non‑functional requirements, including security, resiliency, scalability, performance, and maintainability
  • Experience working in highly regulated environments, ensuring privacy, accessibility, and audit readiness by design
  • Ability to influence cross‑divisional decisions without direct authority
  • A strong software engineering and/or enterprise architecture background

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.
  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.
  • As part of our global team, we’ll support you in shaping the future you want to see.
