As a Principal Engineer, you will help drive that impact by leading the design and integration of fleet, depot, and customer facing systems that must perform safely and reliably at scale. This role is critical to a growing organization focused on innovation—where engineering solutions directly improve operational efficiency, prevent spills, protect people, and reduce environmental impact. You’ll work cross-functionally to turn data and field insight into practical designs that make a measurable difference. 

Location and Travel

This position is located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro area. The ideal candidate prefers to work onsite in Mendota Heights, MN, 4+ days per week. We offer flexible work arrangements including flexibility for occasional work from home. This position can expect domestic travel up to 10% travel.

Compensation
The base salary range for this position is $145,000 - $165,000 annually, plus a 15% bonus opportunity. Please note that the base salary will vary within this range and is based on candidate experience and qualifications and market conditions.

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Own reliability and performance for fleet systems, depot load/unload equipment, and depot tank systems. 
  • Improve truck and depot loading equipment to increase loading efficiency. 
  • Improve truck equipment to speed up customer fills and removals. 
  • Lead integration of truck, depot, and store equipment into a single operating system. 
  • Ensure new fleet trucks are compatible with depot and store equipment. 
  • Design solutions to prevent customer tank overflows (tank design, sensors, and safeguards). 
  • Improve truck tank systems and coupling processes for depot/store loading. 
  • Troubleshoot depot tank level measurement systems and perform root-cause analysis. 
  • Use IT/operations data to identify trends and convert findings into engineering requirements and designs. 
  • Partner with leaders to set priorities and break work into actionable plans. 
  • Incorporates safety principles, risk analysis, and operational considerations into equipment design to protect customers, employees, and assets.  

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; emphasis in mechanical engineering or related field preferred. 
  • Experience: 10+ years of engineering experience with some understanding or experience in the following: Solid modeling (i.e.CREO or SolidWorks); Manufacturing techniques such as metal forming, machining, plastic molding and forming, and fabrication; Basic electrical and electronic circuits; Basic fluid mechanics such as hydraulic circuits and flow equations. 
  • Experience managing teams (preferably engineering teams) OR Engineering skills widely recognized within or outside an organization as unique and proven to deliver business results. 
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office products and CAD products. 
  • Hands-on Engineering: Experience building prototypes, testing setups, and vetting design concepts by participating in initial installations 
  • Leadership Abilities: Proven ability to mentor and influence peers and take initiative without direct authority 
  • Customer Service: Manages and responds promptly to internal and external customer needs; Solicits internal customer feedback to improve products and service 
  • Communication: Communicates clearly, actively listens; responds to questions in a timely and effective manner. 
  • Dependability: Takes responsibility for work and decisions; operates with appropriate autonomy while remaining open to feedback and direction; consistently meets commitments and collaborates effectively. 
  • Motivation: Sets and achieves goals; Demonstrates persistence and overcomes obstacles; Holds self to a high standard of excellence. 
  • Data Driven Decision Making: Synthesizes complex or diverse information and research data; leverages data to identify gaps and drive decisions.  
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 
  • Travel: Ability to travel overnight required (up to 10%).
