The Principal Software Engineer works with a team of other software engineers, network and systems engineers to design, implement, and deploy software which meet customer's requirements, scales easily, removes the limitations of traditional networking solutions, and supports deployment in highly available environments The Principal Software Engineer at times leads or at a minimum is an active participant in architecture and design of various software components focused on creating applications that leverage technologies such as virtualization, micro services, SDN, NFV, and Big Data platforms and technologies. They work on technical assignments that are difficult, requiring judgment in resolving issues or in making recommendations. They determine methods and procedures on new assignments and work on assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative. They understand the implications of their work and make recommendations for solutions. They normally receive little instruction on daily work and only require general instructions on newly introduced assignments. At times, they may be an informal team leader.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Technical Engineering Services
    - Drives engineering projects and team members by developing software solutions; conducting tests and inspections; preparing reports and calculations. Encouraged to supervise base through senior level engineers as needed.
    - Presents project improvement scenarios to management for consideration.

  • Technical Leadership
    - Supervise and influence relevant industry technologies and standards.
    - Present highly technical concepts to both technical and non-technical decision-makers.
    - Continuously learns, creates content, and teaches others specific subject areas.
    - Informally coaches and contributes to the development of others through mentoring or in house workshops and learning sessions. Develops engineers across functional teams on technology decisions.
    - Influence technology and policy decisions made across the VP organization.
    - Understand financial decisions, including NPV and ROI, based on customer experience/business drivers.

  • Technology Strategy
    - Evaluates new and existing technology options that support business goals.
    - Understands current technology that supports business goals. Understands system protocols, how systems operate and data flows. Aware of current technology benefits. Expected to independently develop a full software stack. Understands the building blocks, interactions, dependencies, and tools required to complete software and automation work. Independent study of current technology is encouraged. Interact with system engineers to define system requirement and/or necessary requirements for automation,
     

  • Innovation
    - Develops, designs, and implements new ideas which utilize new frameworks to improve an existing or new system/process/service.
    - Investigative independent study and problem solving for non-routine tasks.
    - Analyzes existing processes and vendor roadmaps to highlight upcoming technology changes that would make the processes or tools more effective within a given VP function.
    - Contributes to the creation of company IPR.

  • Technical Writing
    - Writes advanced documentation, architecture, capabilities, limitations, and advantages for technologies. Creates and modifies clear documentation for new code and systems used.
    - Documenting systems designs, presentations, and business requirements for consumption and consideration at the director level.
    - Contributes to industry professional norms.
    - Contributes to the protection of company IPR.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree Computer Science or Engineering (Required)

  • 7-10 years Technical engineering experience. Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Deep knowledge in running a large scale Kubernetes cluster, you have built and managed a fleet of 50+ clusters 

Licenses and Certifications:

Preferred Qualification:

    • MS/BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent proven experience

    • Demeanor and interest in continually learning new things

    • Highly proficient in at least two of languages including but not limited to: Go, Java, Python, C#, JavaScript. 

    • Deep experience in at least one of the following domains: public cloud (AWS/Azure), server-side web dev, client-side web dev, REST/web services, container based applications on Kubernetes, large scale data analytics using Machine Learning frameworks. networking and service mesh. 

    • Knowledge of design principles and standard methodologies for implementing web APIs

    • Large scale application experience with AWS and/or Azure cloud technologies

    • Experience building massive-scale distributed applications in multi-region, highly available architectures with incredible focus on zero downtime.  

    • Understanding of development frameworks, architecture concepts and terminology

    • 7 years of development experience writing widely used code and leading development teams

    • Expert using version control systems such as GIT

    • Well-versed, having worked with continuous integration and development (CI/CD) methodologies

    • Experience integrating Cloud Monitoring tools (CloudWatch, Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, Application monitoring, others)

    • Database experience in SQL and NoSQL database (Cassandra, Elastics or other)

    • Other Open Source tools in the Kubernetes ecosystem such as Helm, CNI, OPA,  etc. 

Use departmental agile software development methodologies as a guide for development activities

  • Meet project schedules by providing accurate estimates of effort required for development work. Communicate updates on project progress to development and project management. Raise issues which may affect project success to management

  • Maintain technical skills, participate in open source projects and guide through continuing education and training

  • Collaborate with other teams including Business, Testing, Project Management and Application Support for successful delivery of systems enhancements

Base Pay Range: $133,500 - $240,700

Corporate Bonus Target: 20%

The pay range above is the general base pay range for a successful candidate in the role. The successful candidate’s actual pay will be based on various factors, such as work location, qualifications, and experience, so the actual starting pay will vary within this range.

At T-Mobile, employees in regular, non-temporary roles are eligible for an annual bonus or periodic sales incentive or bonus, based on their role. Most Corporate employees are eligible for a year-end bonus based on company and/or individual performance and which is set at a percentage of the employee’s eligible earnings in the prior year. Certain positions in Customer Care are eligible for monthly bonuses based on individual and/or team performance.
