Marketing Technology (MarTech) is a platform team with the goal of delivering best-in-class tools, systems and capabilities that are used by our stakeholders in Marketing, Creative, Policy, the Guest and Hosting product teams, and more. Our mission is to enable these teams to deliver highly personalized and relevant content to the Airbnb community, both on and off of the Airbnb platform. This enables us to contribute to Airbnb’s mission and to drive sustainable growth and enhanced customer engagement.

The MarTech platform powers all digital marketing channels including landing pages, email, push, SMS, and digital advertising, as well as the machine learning/AI and data platforms that feed into the management and optimization of these channels.


The Difference You Will Make:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Engineer to join our Marketing Technology Team. In this role, you will lead the architectural design and strategic direction of the next generation, cutting-edge MarTech Platform to support the next phase of Airbnb expanding beyond the core. You will work closely with other technology leaders across Airbnb to build an enterprise level MarTech platform that is flexible, scalable, and user-friendly, allowing teams to harness data and technology to deliver personalized marketing experiences that drive engagement and growth. 

As a senior technical individual contributor, the Principal Engineer will bring a unique skill set and experience to the organization, and work to solve broader technical challenges around defining clear interfaces and interactions between MarTech and other technology teams. You will lend expertise to specific teams and deep dive into projects as needed. Airbnb’s engineering organization values everyone’s input and ideas. Even at a senior level, all Software Engineers at Airbnb are expected to be hands on and contribute code and/or be involved in the architecture/design.


A Typical Day: 

  • Define the long-term architectural vision, technology strategy, and roadmap for the MarTech team, focusing on scalability, performance, privacy and security. Serve as the strategic thought partner within the organization.
  • Partner with the MarTech leadership to evolve and enhance the following systems:
    • Paid Advertising Platform covering SEM, Affiliates, Display and Brand Measurement.
    • Content Management - tools to create, manage and publish personalized content across all marketing channels
    • Customer Data Management - Data Segmentation and Unified Customer Profile
    • Customer Journey Mapping -  tools to create, manage and publish automated customer marketing and product life cycles
    • Airbnb Notifications Platform - delivers billions of notifications yearly to Guests and Hosts.
    • Data & AI/ML platform - data and intelligence that powers and enables measurement of  personalized content across all marketing channels.
  • Drive the design and implementation of high-impact projects that enhance user experience and data integrity across all user interactions.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with Product, Data Science, Engineering teams and Business teams to deliver holistic and high-quality customer-centric solutions.
  • Advocate for and implement best practices and standards in system design, development, and maintenance.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineering teams, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
  • Influence company-wide technology decisions and contribute to the broader architectural roadmap.

Your Expertise:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, related field, or equivalent work.
  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, with a significant portion dedicated to system architecture and design with focus in Platforms, Data and distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building and scaling high-availability systems and platforms, with a deep understanding of service-oriented architecture. Have architected/shipped several large-scale projects with multiple dependencies across teams.
  • Strong leadership skills, with 5+ years of experience as a senior-level technical lead or architect, driving the technical direction and strategy across multiple teams or projects.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proven track record of working effectively across teams and organizations.
  • Experience leading and mentoring other senior ICs.
  • Intellectual curiosity to approach challenges with fresh perspective and awareness associated with industry trends and dynamics.
  • Deep knowledge in the domain of MarTech or AdTech is highly desirable.

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. How We'll Take Care of You:

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
