This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin Technical Center, GM Global Technical Center, or Mountain View Technical Center three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business if more than 3 days].
The Role
General Motors is looking for a Principal Engineer to help define and build the next generation of marketing AI capabilities. This is a senior technical leadership role for an expert who can shape architecture, build production-grade systems, and turn complex data and AI capabilities into practical solutions that improve how marketing teams generate insights, create briefs, target audiences, activate campaigns, and optimize performance.
This role is ideal for a specialist who has already built modern AI platforms or agent-powered solutions at scale and wants to apply that experience to a large, data-rich environment with meaningful business impact. You will work across data, software, AI, and marketing stakeholders to create secure, scalable, governed solutions that can move from concept to enterprise adoption.
What You'll Do
- Define the technical vision and architecture for marketing AI platforms and solutions
- Build and scale production-grade AI systems that connect data, knowledge assets, agent workflows, and downstream activation
- Lead the design of orchestration patterns across multiple domain-specific AI and data assets, including governed access to underlying platforms and services.
- Partner with engineering, data science, product, infrastructure, governance, and marketing teams to prioritize and deliver the highest-value use cases.
- Establish strong engineering standards for reliability, observability, deployment, security, and compliance
- Drive technical decisions across platform reuse, custom development, and build-vs-buy tradeoffs
- Mentor senior engineers and raise the bar for architecture and engineering quality across multiple teams
- Opportunity to shape a high-impact marketing AI platform from the ground up
- Chance to work on real enterprise-scale data, AI, and orchestration challenges
- Broad technical scope across architecture, platforms, agents, data, and applied AI
- Visible business impact in a space where speed, insight quality, and optimization matter
- Ability to influence how a major enterprise builds durable internal AI capability rather than relying on disconnected external point solutions.
Technical Leadership
- Create a clear target architecture for marketing AI across data platforms, agent frameworks, orchestration, and user-facing experiences
- Translate ambiguous business opportunities into concrete technical approaches, delivery plans, and reusable engineering patterns
- Serve as a senior technical authority and trusted partner for cross-functional leaders and engineers
- Design and implement scalable AI platforms and services that support marketing use cases end to end
- Build systems that support insight synthesis, retrieval, briefing support, audience intelligence, campaign execution, and optimization.
- Create reusable frameworks and components that accelerate delivery of future marketing AI solutions
- Ensure solutions are production-ready, measurable, and maintainable
Data, Governance, and Enterprise Readiness
- Design for secure, permission-aware access to marketing data and AI services in enterprise environments.
- Partner with teams responsible for data products, metadata, privacy, and platform governance
- Help establish scalable patterns for onboarding new data sources, domains, and use cases without creating fragmented point solutions
- Build with strong attention to compliance, resilience, and long-term operability
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 10+ years in software engineering, including deep experience as a senior technical leader in complex enterprise environments
- Proven experience building large-scale AI, ML, or agent-based systems in production
- Strong experience with cloud-native data and AI platforms, including modern data architecture, APIs, orchestration, and distributed systems
- Demonstrated success designing platforms that enable other engineering or product teams to move faster
- Strong understanding of secure system design, access controls, governance, and enterprise-grade reliability
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams and stakeholders
- Experience building AI products or platforms for marketing, advertising, personalization, customer intelligence, or digital engagement
- Experience with retrieval systems, knowledge platforms, semantic context, or agent orchestration
- Experience with Databricks, Azure-native services, or similar cloud data and AI platforms
- Experience integrating AI capabilities into real business workflows rather than isolated prototypes
- Experience in highly regulated or governance-heavy enterprise environments
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
- Familiarity with enterprise marketing ecosystems such as Adobe or adjacent platforms
- Masters degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
