Job Description: Principal Engineer Manufacturing Engineering

Position Summary

The Principal Engineer Manufacturing Engineering is responsible for leading the  Engineering team with complete lifecycle of Tubular Reactor (or) Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) systems, from concept development, engineering design, testing, and commissioning through to continuous improvement and technology innovation.

 

This role provides strategic leadership across Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Technical Operations to ensure delivery of reactor solutions that meet customer requirements, industry standards, safety regulations, cost targets, and project schedules.

The incumbent serves as the organization's technical authority for reactor technology while driving operational excellence, innovation, and business growth.

 

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute the engineering and manufacturing strategy for reactor products.
  • Drive technology leadership in Tubular Reactor and Plug Flow Reactor systems.
  • Establish long-term engineering and manufacturing roadmaps.
  • Support business expansion through innovative product development and process improvements.
  • Drive profitability through cost optimization and operational excellence initiatives.

Design Engineering Leadership

Reactor Design & Development

  • Lead conceptual, basic, FEED, and detailed engineering activities.
  • Develop and optimize reactor designs based on reaction kinetics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer principles.
  • Drive scale-up activities from pilot to commercial production.
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, specifications, datasheets, and design documents.
  • Provide technical leadership for new product development initiatives.

Mechanical Engineering

  • Oversee pressure vessel and reactor mechanical design.
  • Review:
    • Thermal design calculations
    • Mechanical integrity assessments
    • Structural analysis
    • Fatigue calculations
    • Pressure drop evaluations
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Process Engineering

  • Lead reactor modelling and simulation activities.
  • Support catalyst selection and performance optimization.
  • Improve reactor efficiency, conversion rates, yield, and energy performance.
  • Drive process technology improvements and innovation.

Manufacturing Engineering Leadership

Production

  • Mentor fabrication, testing operations for reactors and associated equipment.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing procedures and quality standards.
  • Ensure efficient utilization of manufacturing resources.
  • Review production planning and fabrication schedules.
  • Drive manufacturing readiness for complex projects.

Operational Excellence

  • Improve productivity, throughput, and equipment utilization.
  • Reduce manufacturing cycle time and cost.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations.
  • Drive automation and digital manufacturing adoption.

Project Execution & Delivery

  • Lead multidisciplinary project execution teams.
  • Ensure engineering and manufacturing deliverables are completed on schedule.
  • Monitor project costs, risks, quality, and resource allocation.
  • Support procurement and vendor development activities.
  • Participate in FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup support.
  • Resolve technical and manufacturing challenges during project execution.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • ASME Section VIII
    • API Standards
    • PED
    • ISO 9001
    • ISO 45001
    • Customer specifications
  • Lead technical reviews, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Drive zero-defect quality initiatives.
  • Support HAZOP, HAZID, MOC, and process safety programs.
  • Promote a strong safety culture across engineering and manufacturing functions.

Technology & Innovation

  • Drive R&D programs related to reactor design and manufacturing technologies.
  • Lead digital engineering initiatives.
  • Implement advanced simulation and manufacturing technologies.
  • Evaluate emerging reactor technologies and process innovations.
  • Support patent development and intellectual property creation.

Commercial & Customer Engagement

  • Support sales and business development teams.
  • Participate in customer technical reviews and proposal discussions.
  • Review technical bids and contracts.
  • Act as the primary technical advisor for reactor solutions.
  • Build strong relationships with customers, licensors, EPCs, and technology partners.

People Leadership

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams comprising:
    • Design Engineers
    • Mechanical Engineers
    • Electrical & Electronics Engineers
    • Project Engineers
  • Build organizational capability and succession plans.
  • Mentor senior engineering and operations teams.
  • Establish performance goals and competency development programs.

Requirements

Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree / master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent.

Experience

  • 10-15 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years in leadership positions.
  • Extensive experience in design and manufacturing of:
    • Tubular Reactors
    • Plug Flow Reactors
    • Pressure Vessels
    • Heat Exchangers
    • Process Equipment
  • Proven leadership of Start-up/Mid-sized engineering and manufacturing organizations.

Skills Required

  • At least 5 years of experience in leadership positions
  • Extensive experience designing and manufacturing tubular reactors, plug flow reactors, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and process equipment
  • Experience leading startup or mid-sized engineering and manufacturing organizations
  • Expertise in reactor design, reaction engineering, heat and mass transfer, CFD analysis, mechanical design, pressure vessel engineering, and process simulation
  • Knowledge of production planning, automation, and lean manufacturing
  • Proficiency with Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, ANSYS, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks
  • Experience with specialty chemicals, petrochemicals, fertilizers, hydrogen and green energy, oil and gas, process equipment manufacturing, or EPC organizations
