Principal Design System Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Principal Design System Engineer to help shape and drive the continued evolution of Lighthouse Design System, 3Shape’s design system across web, mobile, and on-premises software solutions.

You will be the first dedicated Design System engineer and will be overall responsible for defining the technical direction and development of Lighthouse Design System. In this role, you will combine technical leadership, hands-on engineering, and cross-functional collaboration. Together with other colleagues, you will build a scalable foundation that enables our product teams to efficiently deliver consistent, accessible, and high-quality experiences. To achieve this, you will be balancing technical solutions with stakeholder management – staying ambitious yet pragmatic with the product. Likewise, you will be fundamental in creating followership across the broader organization, in ensuring its implementation, adaptability and recognition.

Key responsibilities

• Champion continuous improvement in how we develop, drive and implement the Lighthouse Design System, ensuring high ambition yet pragmatic approach to the result.

• Creating followership, by enabling product teams to adopt, contribute to, and get value from the Lighthouse Design System.

• Raise the engineering bar across front-end teams, by establishing scalable engineering standards, patterns, and quality practices across web, mobile, and on-premise software solutions.

• Own and mature our internal component library - balancing scalability, usability, performance, and maintainability.

• Partner with Product Portfolio Strategy and the Design System UX Lead, to ensure technical robustness, business impact and end-user value.

• Mentor and coach engineers that contribute to the Lighthouse Design System along with staying hands-on during key technical initiatives.

What are we looking for?

• 10+ years software engineering experience, with significant experience in design system management and front-end development having held a similar principal or staff-level engineering role.

• Proven ability to influence technical adoption and direction for Design System adoption in an organization with many technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Strong experience with Angular / TypeScript and modern front-end engineering. If you have experience working with multiple architectural design patterns across multiple tech-stacks, it is considered a plus.

• Strong experience with building and maintaining component libraries, design systems, or platform-like products serving multiple teams and the ability to establish clear approaches for ownership boundaries, versioning, and backwards compatibility.

• Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to a strong engineering culture.

• Experience of working closely together with designers and product managers and navigating technical trade-offs across multiple stakeholders.

• Experience in applying AI-assisted development tools and workflows to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and developer experience, while maintaining strong technical standards and human oversight.

• Experience with improving developer experience through tooling, automation, documentation, or processes. To improve the way teams, contribute to and adopt the design system.

• A pragmatic and hands-on approach, with a passion for building simple and scalable solutions to complex problems.
