A Day in the Life

The Principal Design Automation Engineer will spearhead transformative automation programs from initial vision through full production deployment. This leader advances equipment mechanization, innovative process development, and frictionless system integration, elevating operational efficiency, reliability, and scalability across the manufacturing landscape.

Working alongside diverse engineering and production teams, this role shapes and maintains automation roadmaps, enforces robust equipment standards, and ensures every solution meets performance, safety, and compliance expectations throughout its lifecycle. It’s a critical, hands-on position for an expert who thrives on turning complex challenges into robust, future-ready automation solutions.

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Design and implement integrated automation systems, ensuring compatibility across hardware and software platforms. Develop processes to transition from manual to automated operations. 

  • Develop and drive best practices around Automation equipment design principles and standards, software change control, and process control for consistent and scalable applications. 

  • Oversee and support the construction and integration of automated machinery from business case to deployment. Support the full equipment life cycle, from development to sunsetting. 

  • Develop, build, and test Designs and concepts for feasibility 

  • Improve equipment uptime through troubleshooting, design changes, vendor partnerships, and hypercare. 

  • Work with sites and maintain an automation roadmap for value streams. 

  • Collaborate with Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and sustaining engineering teams to integrate process changes. 

  • Document equipment requirements and review vendor designs for compliance. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's degree plus 7+ years of relevant Engineering experience OR 

  • Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Must have experience in troubleshooting of control systems software, I/O issues, controls/electromechanical equipment, DC Drives, VFD's, Servo Drives, PLC's and PC based systems to ensure reliable automation performance. 

  • Utilize simulation tools to validate automation concepts, optimize workflows, and predict system performance. 

  • Implement vision systems for inspection, quality control, and process automation. 

  • Design, program, and deploy robotic solutions for manufacturing and material handling applications. 

  • Integrate Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and collaborative robots (Cobots) into production environments for flexible automation. 

  • Develop and optimize manufacturing processes to transition from manual to automated workflows, ensuring scalability and efficiency. 

  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$122,400.00 - $183,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).

 

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to all regular employees: Incentive plans, 401(k) plan plus employer contribution and match, Short-term disability, Paid time off, Paid holidays, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Non-qualified Retirement Plan Supplement (subject to IRS earning minimums), and Capital Accumulation Plan (available to Vice Presidents and above, or subject to IRS earning minimums).

 

Regular employees are those who are not temporary, such as interns.  Temporary employees are eligible for paid sick time, as required under applicable state law, and the Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Please note some of the above benefits may not apply to workers in Puerto Rico.
