Principal Data Engineer

Position Description:

Builds scalable and robust data solutions for websites, using Python. Builds, maintains, and tunes stored procedures and performs data analysis. Streams processing in relational data stream management systems to implement single and multi-tenant data solutions, using SQL. Connects complex software applications and services, using Python, Azure MySQL/SQL, Azure Functions, and Snaplogic. Uses business knowledge to translate the vision for divisional initiatives into business solutions by developing complex or multiple software applications and conducts studies of alternatives. Analyzes and recommends changes in project development policies, procedures, standards, and strategies to development experts and management. Influences decisions and solutions by working closely with squad leaders, engineers, and architects to form strategic partnerships.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Participates in architecture design teams.
• Defines and implements application-level architecture.
• Develops applications on complex projects, components, and subsystems for the division.
• Recommends development testing tools and methodologies and reviews and validates test plans.
• Responsible for QA readiness of software deliverables.
• Develops comprehensive documentation for multiple applications or subsystems.
• Establishes full project life cycle plans for complex projects across multiple platforms.
• Responsible for meeting project goals on-time and on-budget.
• Advises on risk assessment and risk management strategies for projects.
• Plans and coordinates project schedules and assignments for multiple projects.
• Acts as a primary liaison for business units to resolve various project/technology issues.
• Provides technology solutions to daily issues and technical evaluation estimates on technology initiatives.
• Advises senior management on technical strategy.
• Mentors junior team members.
• Performs independent and complex technical and functional analysis for multiple projects supporting several divisional initiatives.
• Develops original and creative technical solutions to on-going development efforts.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and five (5) years of experience as a Principal Data Engineer (or closely related occupation) designing and developing scalable and robust multi-tenant data solutions for Websites, products, data warehouses, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs),  using MySQL, Snowflake, Python, Snaplogic, AzureFunctions, and Python.

Or, alternatively, Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and three (3) years of experience as a Principal Data Engineer (or closely related occupation) designing and developing scalable and robust multi-tenant data solutions for Websites, products, data warehouses, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), using MySQL, Snowflake, Python, Snaplogic, AzureFunctions, and Python.

Skills and Knowledge:

Candidate must also possess:

• Demonstrated Expertise (“DE”) building and designing multi-tenant database,  data modelling, developing multi-tenant data solutions, and delivering efficient and robust database code and database design for Websites and products, using SQL (Oracle, SQL MI, MySQL, and Snowflake), Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure big data technologies, structured and unstructured data from files, APIs, and large datasets in data warehouse environments.
• DE building tools that use data pipelines to provide actionable insights into key business performance metrics, using Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL)/ Extract, Load, Transform (ELT) tools -- Informatica, Snaplogic, AzureFunctions, Python, or AWS Services on Cloud Data warehouse (Snowflake).
• DE designing, developing, and deploying batch data processing pipelines and dynamic feature generated platforms, using AWS Cloud, Python, and MySQL; building and deploying batch processing infrastructure on Cloud, using REST APIs; performing the complete setup of Integration and Deployment using GitHub; applying Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) practices on database releases and source code management in the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC); and driving epics, stories, and tasks, using project management methodologies (Agile and Scrum) and Jira.
• DE performing data architecture design and implementation, using diagram and documentation software -- Atlassian Confluence and draw.io; designing and performing data ETL and migration frameworks, using Snaplogic, AzureFunctions, and Python; performing data and batch integration across Cloud platforms (AWS and Azure) and performing metadata management, design, development, implementation, and management of batch processing pipelines, using Python and Cloud technologies; and developing and supporting business critical applications within  a financial services and benefits administration environment, triaging and addressing production incidents to mitigate business impact and identifying root cause, using logs and reports.
