Principal Data Engineer

Job Purpose:

This role requires a blend of leadership and hands-on technical expertise. The candidate will be responsible for leading data engineering strategy and delivery across Manufacturing & Engineering data products within Global Supply Chain Data & AI organization. This includes collaborating with solution architects, data product teams, data modelers, business intelligence developers and data engineers from different data products and cross-functional teams.

The Principal Data Engineer will also be responsible for mentoring a team of data engineers. This includes technical coaching, code review and ensuring adherence to best practices in data development lifecycle management. The role also encompasses the maintenance and support of existing data pipelines, guaranteeing security, high availability, reliability, and optimal performance. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong track record in data engineering space in modern data platforms. Strong communication skills, both technical and non-technical, are essential to effectively liaise with various stakeholders, including management and IT teams to align technology solutions with business strategies and objectives.

Key responsibilities for the Principal Data Engineer:

• Lead end to end delivery of data engineering projects for data products.

• Develop, measure, and monitor key metrics for the data engineering services and consistently seek to iterate on and improve them.

• Define, document, and lead the execution of data engineering best practices.

• Ensure the technical delivery of data pipelines is compliant with the standards.

• Provides leadership, technical direction and expertise to architecture and engineering teams composed of full-time employees, strategic partners, and software vendors.

• Pro-actively engages in experimentation and innovation to drive continuous improvement.

• Drives a culture of innovation, transparency, and trust.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

• Overall, 10 to 14 years of experience in building cloud-based data products in agile software development.

• Strong hands-on experience in designing, development, testing and deployments of complex data pipelines in modern data platform using ADLS Gen2, Databricks, Spark, Python, Azure Data Factory for data ingestion, data integration and data consumption.

• Experience of CI/CD implementations using Git, Azure DevOps, or similar tool.

• Experience in optimizing data storage and compute resources.

• Experience in collaborating with platform and architecture teams for cloud infrastructure provisioning.

• Knowledge of database design, database concepts and SQL

• Knowledge and experience of building reusable components and frameworks for data ingestion and transformation jobs.

• Good communication skills and ability to articulate the data engineering solution to stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following qualifications, it would be a plus:

• Certification(s) in Azure data engineering.

• Experience in using tools as Jira and Confluence for task and knowledge document management.
