Role Purpose

Working within our Hydrogen and Ammonia Research team, the Principal Analyst – Hydrogen will be responsible for leading and developing detailed supply-demand, cost and price forecasts for the APAC region. Leveraging the full breadth of Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary data, models and expertise, you will assess policies, cost structures and technology developments to assess the competitiveness of low-carbon hydrogen. The role requires an understanding of processes supporting the production, transportation and consumption of hydrogen; energy demand forecasting; and inter-fuel competition drivers across multiple energy, chemical and metals value chains.

You will work across Wood Mackenzie’s Power & Renewables; Chemicals; Oils; Metals & Mining; Carbon Management; and Transport groups groups to develop an integrated view of the penetration of low-carbon hydrogen across global markets. This will include developing Wood Mackenzie’s narrative on major policy decisions and how those influence hydrogen adoption. You will further develop existing proprietary models and – where necessary – create new modelling solutions to provide granular and transparent supply and demand outlooks. This capability will be leveraged further through our scenarios and technologies team in developing outlooks for our Accelerated Energy Transition scenarios.

The role provides the opportunity for line management of a growing team of hydrogen analysts in the APAC region.

You will be the client-facing lead in APAC and be responsible for contributing to won business in region, client interaction and critical industry input. You will represent Wood Mackenzie externally at Hydrogen events and contribute to media output as our expertise expands.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ownership and development of long-term projections of low-carbon hydrogen supply and demand by country for all APAC markets
  • Staying abreast of evolving hydrogen policy across APAC markets – quantifying the impact through analysis and providing opinion on its significance
  • Leverage Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary asset valuation work and levelized cost of hydrogen analysis to assess the competitiveness of low-carbon hydrogen against competing fuels across all demand sectors
  • Opportunity for line management of a growing team of hydrogen analysts in the APAC region
  • Leading analysis and model development for transportation and storage of hydrogen (and derivates), as well as value-chain emissions
  • Present findings in market outlooks, industry insight pieces and in person via conference calls, webinars, conferences and client visits
  • Build a strong relationship with industry stakeholders in APAC region. Engage with policymakers and project developers on how markets are evolving, understanding their perspectives, and how that may influence our analysis
  • Strengthen the data inputs through surveys, interviews, and secondary research
  • Provide high-quality client service to research subscribers through responding to inquiries, one-on-one conversations, and special events
  • Collaborate with SMEs and internal stakeholders across Wood Mackenzie to support the creation of our content

Knowledge and Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in commodity markets and forecasting, with demonstrable experience in hydrogen or hydrogen-adjacent industries
  • Experience of applying modelling solutions for analysis of the hydrogen value-chain
  • Passionate about the hydrogen industry and energy transition
  • Strong familiarity with policy landscape and its importance to influencing the penetration of low-carbon hydrogen
  • Familiar with energy demand, technology adoption and technology cost modelling
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer market questions
  • Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator
  • Strong communication skills. Comfortable interacting with clients and industry stakeholders
  • An engaging nature, capable of connecting with co-workers, clients and industry stakeholders in a wide range of professional setting
  • Experience of line management or a willingness to develop this responsibility
