Role Purpose

We are seeking a Principal Bulk Commodities Analyst to join our Bulks Assets team, based in Delhi, India. As a part of our global team of seasoned experts in the Metals and Mining Research Unit, you will contribute to our comprehensive research coverage of global coal, iron ore, and steel assets. Your focus will be on market and supply analysis, including supply demand dynamics, price forecasts, production, costs, mining parameters, and operational risks. At Wood Mackenzie, our high-quality Bulks Assets and Markets research supports clients in navigating the rapidly transitioning energy sector, empowering them to make informed commercial decisions for sustained business success.

In this role, you will primarily cover some of the top coal assets in Australia and Indonesia, global steel and iron ore assets, support thermal coal market analysis and price forecasting, and lead engagements with key clients.

Main Responsibilities

As part of our team of analysts and subject matter experts, you will deliver in-depth and insightful research on the Bulks sector. You will excel in price forecasting, market analysis, and asset modelling, with a deep understanding of the key mining metrics that drive these models. Additionally, you will develop informed perspectives on corporate strategies, business environments, project economics, and government mining policies.

Building and maintaining strong relationships within the Bulks natural resources community will be crucial to your role. These connections will allow you to gather intelligence that enhances the quality and timeliness of our research. You will also become a trusted expert for clients and the media, collaborating closely with our sales and consulting teams to support clients. This will involve regularly presenting data and insights on the coal industry and showcasing how our solutions help clients make better decisions.

You will prioritize what matters most to clients and the team, regularly interacting with senior business stakeholders. Your role will include championing change, fostering an open, innovative, and dynamic team environment, mentoring and coaching junior analysts, and embracing new technologies and techniques to improve data processes and workflow. You will also collaborate with client management and consulting teams to generate new research, sales, and consulting opportunities.

About You

You have over 10 years of experience in the metals and mining sector, supported by a degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Economics, Business, Mining, Geology, Engineering). Your background includes reviewing steel, iron ore and coal mining assets, conducting competitor analysis and benchmarking, and developing industry-related cost curves. Experience in iron ore and coal mineral exploration, mining operations, trade, and marketing is also valuable.

Your ability to see the big picture allows you to analyze and draw coherent conclusions from diverse datasets. You are skilled at communicating complex or technical information in a clear and accessible manner. You thrive in a collaborative, commercial, and client-focused environment.

You have a strong command of Microsoft Office products, and programming skills are a plus.

You are thoughtful, intellectually curious, creative, and comfortable presenting to public audiences and engaging with executives in small groups.

Your proven track record in building strong working relationships, developing networks, and influencing others speaks to your productive and driven work style. You consistently seek out and implement better ways of working, making a tangible impact within your team and the broader organization.

Expectations

  • We are a hybrid working company and the successful applicant will be expected to be physically present in the office at least 3 days per week to foster and contribute to a collaborative environment, but this may be subject to change in the future.
  • Due to the global nature of the team, a degree of flexible working will be required to accommodate different time zones.
