Summary Generated by Built In

At BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, we’re building the foundation for an AI‑enabled future—one where our teams work smarter, our operations move faster, and our 3.4 million members experience a more responsive, reliable, and affordable healthcare journey. To help lead that transformation, we’re hiring a Principal AI Workflow Engineer to serve as a senior technical and strategic leader driving enterprise‑wide AI workflow modernization.

Empowered to lead this work across clinical operations, you’ll report directly to our SVP & Chief Medical Officer and partner closely with care management, pharmacy and utilization management teams, as well as accreditation and medical policy teams to influence automation strategy, elevate operational efficiency, improve member clinical support, and imagine what’s possible beyond today’s tooling. You won’t just be designing AI pipelines—you’ll shape how AI comes to life across the organization.

To do that, you’ll need:

  • Experience with Generative AI, LLM integration, or agent frameworks

  • Understanding of APIs, orchestration, and integration patterns

  • Proficiency in Python and associated AI / ML libraries and frameworks
  • Willingness to understand care management and utilization management platforms and supports

  • To abide by HIPAA guidelines

Our ideal candidates will also bring experience in healthcare (other payers, hospital systems, health tech companies) and/or supporting clinical teams.

If you’re inspired by our mission – peace of mind through better health – and ready for a role where your technical leadership directly influences AI strategy and innovation, we’d love to hear from you.

Job Responsibilities

  • Integrate with internal systems and external platforms while following governance, privacy protections, and healthcare compliance requirements.

  • Establish enterprise automation standards, design patterns, and guidance to ensure consistent quality and responsible use.
  • Influence enterprise strategy by evaluating tools, platforms, and capabilities needed to sustain long term automation growth.

What We Do

As Tennessee's largest health plan, we've been helping Tennesseans find their own unique paths to good health for more than 70 years. More than that, we're your neighbors and friends – fellow Tennesseans with deep roots of caring tradition, a focused approach to physical, financial and community good health for today, and a bright outlook for an even healthier tomorrow. Our mission is simple: peace of mind through better health. We're an independent, not-for-profit, locally governed health plan company – meaning we live and work alongside our Tennessee business customers and plan members. Our 6,000 employees across the state have built our strong reputation for integrity, excellent service and community leadership. But we are also part of the BlueCross BlueShield Association, a nationwide association of health care plans. Because of this, our plan members have access to the same quality health benefits while traveling or living out of state that they have while in Tennessee. © 2018 BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Inc., an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association.
