About the role 
 

We’re seeking a Principal AI Platform Engineer to architect, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, cost effective and high-performance AI systems and infrastructure that yield measurable net benefits.    

 

You’ll join an innovative team, who leverage modern AI technologies to reimagine the future of Transurban's data and AI platform. 
 

As our Principal AI Platform Engineer, you’ll contribute to lasting and positive changes that shape the future of our cities and communities. It’s meaningful, challenging and exciting work. 

 

Day-to-day, you will: 
 

  • Define and drive a visionary, long-term technical roadmap for the data and AI platform, aligning with enterprise strategy and the Google partnership.
  • Act as the lead technologist, working with the Senior AI Platform Architect to guide architectural decisions and ensure the platform design is innovative, scalable, and future proof.
  • Champion a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead from the front by actively participating in the design, build, and implementation of complex, next-generation platform components.
  • Spearhead the exploration and adoption of new AI technologies, frameworks, and methodologies to solve critical business problems.
  • Maintain a deep, hands-on understanding of the platform's codebase and infrastructure
  • Engage with stakeholders to clearly define deliverables, change management requirements, and success criteria.
  • Implement a robust DevSecOps framework across the entire AI lifecycle, integrating security best practices for data, models, and code. 

 

This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferable skills and experiences, including: 
 

  • Must be a proven technologist with extensive, hands-on experience in software and platform engineering, particularly in a cloud-native environment (AWS and GCP preferred).
  • Demonstrable inventiveness and expertise in architecting, designing, and building scalable, secure, and high-performance data and AI platforms.
  • Deep, hands-on experience implementing DevSecOps practices specifically for data pipelines, machine learning models, and application code.
  • Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform), containerisation (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD automation, observability and reliability.
  • Proficiency in modern AI/ML technologies and frameworks (e.g., generative AI, multimodal models, multi agent systems, prompt engineering, grounding, alignment, MCP, A2A, etc).
  • Strong software engineering skills, including object-oriented design, microservices, asynchronous systems, streams, orchestration, and interactive user interfaces 
  • Strong leadership skills with a successful track record of managing and mentoring high-performing engineering teams.
  • Experience in managing strategic technology partnerships is highly desirable.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior engineers and fostering a culture of continuous learning and
  • innovation.
  • Ability to influence technical roadmaps and contribute to enterprise-wide AI/ML strategy.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to create and execute a forward-looking technical roadmap.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas in plain language.
  • Formal education and training in Software Engineering or a related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications and postgraduate qualifications are highly regarded.
