About the Pricing & Profitability Unit
The Pricing & Profitability Unit is a specialist function that sits within the Matter Support Team and works directly with attorneys and firm leadership to deliver the commercial intelligence and strategic advice needed to win, structure, and manage client engagements profitably. By working collaboratively across all US practice groups, the team shapes fee strategy, provides matter-level economics oversight, and delivers the financial insight that partners rely on to make confident commercial decisions.
Key responsibilities and deliverables
As a Manager within the Pricing & Profitability Unit, based in New York, you will serve as a trusted pricing adviser to partners and practice group leadership across our US offices. You will bring deep commercial expertise and a proactive advisory approach to the heart of Freshfields' US pricing function, while also contributing to firm-wide initiatives. You will work closely with attorneys, business development colleagues, and finance leadership to drive pricing excellence, strengthen matter economics, and deliver high-quality strategic outcomes.
In this role, you will:
- Support pricing strategy for US practice groups, advising partners on fee structures for pitches, RFPs, and new matter openings, ensuring responses are competitive, commercially sound, and aligned with firm strategy.
- Develop tailored fee arrangements across the full spectrum of structures — hourly, fixed fee, blended rate, success fee, contingency, and hybrid models — matched to client objectives and firm profitability requirements.
- Build and maintain matter-level pricing models, internal rate benchmarks, and comparable engagement data that support timely pricing decisions.
- Contribute to the annual rate-setting process by providing analysis of market positioning, internal realization trends, and client-specific rate intelligence.
- Produce client-facing pricing narratives and financial summaries that articulate the firm's value proposition clearly in terms relevant to each client's business objectives.
- Monitor active matter performance against agreed budgets and pricing assumptions, proactively identifying variances, escalating risks, and advising partners on corrective action.
- Manage and oversee the day to day work of Pricing & Profitability analysts, setting priorities, reviewing outputs for quality and commercial rigor, providing coaching and development, and ensuring timely, high quality support to partners and stakeholders.
- Leverage technology, data analytics, and AI-enabled tools to enhance the quality, speed, and scalability of the team's pricing and profitability work across the US region.
- Assess staffing models, discount structures, and scope assumptions for profitability risk at the outset of engagements and throughout their lifecycle.
- Support the US write‑off approval process by providing commercial analysis and insight, ensuring decisions are assessed on their commercial merits, properly documented, and fed back into future pricing intelligence.
- Provide targeted commercial input to the monthly US revenue forecasting process, sharing relevant pricing and matter‑level intelligence with the Revenue Operations Team to inform assessments of revenue phasing, and timing where this adds incremental insight.
- Lead post-matter reviews on significant engagements, connecting original pricing assumptions to actual outcomes to strengthen future pitch accuracy and build institutional knowledge.
- Stay informed on relevant market and competitor pricing trends, translating insights into practical guidance where directly applicable to US pricing decisions.
- Educate, advise, and coach attorneys on pricing strategy, negotiation positioning, and the commercial implications of fee structure decisions.
This role requires a proactive, commercially minded professional with the ability to balance day-to-day advisory responsibilities with contributions to broader strategic initiatives. It represents a significant opportunity to sit at the intersection of client strategy and financial performance, helping to shape how one of the world's leading law firms prices and delivers its work.
