A Preschool Substitute Teacher supports the lead teacher in creating a nurturing and engaging learning environment for preschool-aged children. This role includes assisting with classroom activities, following lesson plans and daily routines, and supporting children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development through hands-on, play-based learning. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, flexible, and dedicated to creating a positive experience for young learners.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Follow established lesson plans, classroom routines, and activities for preschool-aged children.
- Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all students.
- Supervise children during indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Support children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development through play-based and structured activities.
- Assist with daily routines, including arrival, dismissal, meals, restroom breaks, transitions, and cleanup.
- Promote positive behavior and assist with conflict resolution among students.
- Communicate important information regarding children’s needs or incidents to the Lead Instructor or Recreation Supervisor.
- Maintain classroom cleanliness and follow all health and safety procedures.
- Assist with creative arts, music, movement, and other classroom activities as directed.
- Work collaboratively with classroom staff to support a positive and engaging learning experience.

- Associate’s degree in early childhood education or related field – preferred
- Knowledge of child development and educational best practices
- Ability to create age-appropriate lesson plans and learning activities
- Patience, creativity, and a passion for working with children
- Experience working with children 2-5
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with children, parents, and staff
- Ability to solve problems as they arise
- Must be dependable, energetic, and have a positive attitude
- Ability to enforce Park District rules and safety practices
- Certified in CPR/AED and First Aid is required

SALARY $15.00 per hour
HOURS Hours vary based on program needs and are scheduled only on days when a substitute is needed. Typical hours may fall between 8:00am–3:30pm, with additional hours as needed.
