Niyam is seeking a PostgreSQL Database Administrator to join our team in support of our work with a federal client.  We offer competitive compensation and benefits. We are seeking a PostgreSQL Database Administrator to support a mission-critical federal environment, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining robust database solutions across on-premise and AWS cloud platforms. In this role, you will develop and manage logical and physical data models, perform database upgrades, and ensure high availability, backup, and recovery for RDS/Aurora environments. You will collaborate closely with application, security, and infrastructure teams to support operations, troubleshoot performance issues, and optimize database efficiency using tools like AWS Performance Insights. The position also involves supporting ETL processes (including Informatica), writing triggers and functions, and leading data migration efforts—particularly from Oracle to PostgreSQL—using services such as AWS DMS. Additionally, you will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, participate in proof-of-concept efforts for emerging technologies, and help define database standards and best practices while supporting release management and on-call production operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

    • Build ERD, physical and logical data models.
    • Follow and establish DB standards.
    • Understand PostgreSQL architecture.
    • Upgrade PostgreSQL Databases.
    • Support the Functional Business, Application Development, and Security Technical Teams to provide O&M and Release Management support for landscape components.
    • Integrate and support cloud RDS Databases providing high availability backup.
    • Participate in the design activities consistent with enterprise standards and Agency priorities for continuous improvement (e.g.: Robotics Process Automation, Automated Testing, etc.) to deliver value-added solutions.
    • Participate proof of concept in new technologies.
    • Design, develop and implement approaches for historical data retention and archival storage backup and recovery solutions.
    • Work in a collaborative team environment with other operational (e.g. OS, DBA, network, security, etc.) team members to troubleshoot and optimize performance.
    • Write triggers and functions to support ETL.
    • Migrate data across heterogenous Databases.
    • Work on AWS services specifically AWS DMS, RDS, Lambda, S3.
    • Work on performance insight AWS service.
    • Work with Informatica ETL tool.

    Qualifications and Education Requirements:

    • US Citizenship with ability to obtain a Public Trust.
    • Bachelor’s degree  in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Management Systems or a related discipline (equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of degree).
    • At least seven (7) years of technical experience. 
    • Five (5)+ years of experience as Database Administrator and Developer in PostgreSQL and Oracle environments. 
    • At least (2) Two years of AWS DMS service experience.
    • Familiarity with RDS upgrades. 
    • Experience working on AWS performance insight.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to provide expertise to support application team.
    • Strong written communication skills to document implemented solutions or workarounds.
    • Good understanding of physical and logical data modeling.
    • Capable of working in a team environment and collaborating with other teams like platform support, developers, production support etc..
    • Experience utilizing performance monitoring tools to work with application developers to identify and correct inefficient database operations.
    • Database Migration experience strongly preferred, especially Oracle to PostgreSQL.
    • AWS RDS experience especially Aurora.
    • Experience working with AWS services such as S3 AND Lambda.
    • Strong programming background for writing triggers, functions and procedures.
    • Must be available for Production on-call support. 

    Preferred Skills:

    • Local to Ashburn, VA and available to work onsite. 
    • Proven experience with Oracle to PostgreSQL migrations using AWS DMS.
    • Strong background in performance tuning and query optimization in large-scale PostgreSQL environments.
    • Hands-on experience with AWS Aurora (PostgreSQL) in high-availability production environments.
