Job Description:

Louisiana State University is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in computational coastal and riverine engineering. The appointee will be a member of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the interdisciplinary Center for Computation and Technology. The position is supported by the university-wide commitment to advancing coastal science and engineering, which spans multiple departments, centers, and institutes (www.lsu.edu/coast).


The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University invites applications for Postdoctoral Scholar area of Environmental Engineering. The ultimate goal of the postdoctoral researcher is to make fundamental contributions to the next generation of coastal modeling software.


LSU is designated as the Flagship University in the state of Louisiana, has a total enrollment of more than 30,000 students, and is the only public university in the state to be designated a Carnegie Research I University. The LSU College of Engineering has experienced significant enrollment increases in recent years and has recently occupied the 400,000 square foot Patrick F Taylor building, one the nation’s largest buildings dedicated to engineering education. LSU is located in Baton Rouge which has a metropolitan-area population of more than 870,000. The university’s location, within one of the world’s largest petrochemical corridors and in close proximity to the Mississippi River and its dynamic delta, provides significant opportunities for environmental engineering research. Current strengths of the department include biological waste treatment processes, chemical fate and transport, energy-sustainable electrochemical systems for remediation or power generation, environmental system photochemistry, groundwater hydrology and hydraulics, and coastal engineering. Roles and Responsibilities:


30% Basic research and development on two- and three-dimensional computational models of hydrodynamic flow, waves, and hydrodynamic processes, specifically the authorship of peer-reviewed journal articles and supporting research software.


30% Software development and maintenance for the open source Proteus toolkit for computational methods and simulation (https://proteustoolkit.org).


15%
Partners with supervisor regarding strategic planning for the next generation of coastal modeling software for the accurate and efficient representation of sediment morphodynamics, vegetation, nonlinear waves, and infrastructure across a range of scales, specifically authorship of whitepapers, project proposals, etc.


10% Mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, specifically, supporting research group meetings, guiding student projects, and presenting occasional seminars and classroom presentations.


10% Ongoing training and professional development component to support rigor, reproducibility, and the advancement of research and scholarship.

5% Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Computational Science and Engineering, or related field.


Additional Qualifications Desired: Prior experience and strong motivation to continue work in several of the following areas is highly desirable: multiphase fluid mechanics, sediment and soil mechanics, nonlinear water waves, finite element methods for computational fluid and wave dynamics, and discrete element methods for granular materials.
