The Peter A. Allard School of Law invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow in technology and law.

The Peter A. Allard School of Law is committed to excellence in legal education, research, and public engagement. Situated within an outstanding public university on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people, the Peter A. Allard School of Law offers an inspiring environment for scholars and students to explore law’s role in society and to contribute to improving lives in local communities, across Canada, and around the world.

We welcome applications from early-career legal scholars whose research examines the relationships among law, technology, governance, and society. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, artificial intelligence and law, privacy and data governance, cybersecurity, platform regulation, digital rights, intellectual property and innovation, legal technologies, computational law, and the regulation of emerging technologies. We are particularly interested in candidates with ambitious scholarly agendas, including those using innovative methodologies or interdisciplinary approaches.

This fellowship is applicant-driven, independently structured, and subject-specific. Applicants should apply only if their primary field of research is law and technology, broadly understood.

Eligibility

The successful candidate will have an outstanding academic profile commensurate with their early career stage, including scholarly publications and research plans that demonstrate strong potential. They will be expected to establish and further a productive scholarly agenda during the fellowship.

Candidates must:

  • hold a JD, LLB, or equivalent law degree;

  • doctoral degree in law or a related discipline*;

  • be within five years of completing their doctoral degree;

  • not have previously held more than one postdoctoral fellowship appointment; and

  • not hold, or be on leave from, a faculty position.

Teaching Expectations

There may be an opportunity for the successful candidate to teach a course or seminar during the course of the postdoctoral fellowship.

3. a curriculum vitae, including a list of publications;

Referees should submit reference letters by the same date or as soon as possible thereafter. Unofficial academic transcripts may be submitted with the initial application, but official academic transcripts will be required before appointment. Incomplete applications may not be accepted.

The anticipated start date is November 2, 2026, although a later start date may be possible.

Inclusive Hiring Practices

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous person.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. To comply with the Government of Canada’s reporting requirements, the University gathers information about applicants’ status as either permanent residents of Canada or Canadian citizens. Therefore, all applicants must include one of the following statements in their cover letter:

  • I am a citizen or permanent resident of Canada; or

  • I am not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

Career Interruptions

The University acknowledges that certain circumstances may cause career interruptions that legitimately affect an applicant’s record of research achievement. Applicants are encouraged to note in their applications whether they would like consideration given to the impact of any such circumstances, including those related to health, family, or other circumstances that might allow for a fair assessment of research productivity.

Commitment to Accessibility

The University is committed to creating and maintaining an accessible work environment for all members of its workforce. Within this hiring process, the University will make efforts to create an accessible process for all candidates, including but not limited to people with disabilities.
