We’re in relentless pursuit of breakthroughs that change patients’ lives.
The Role

Why Patients Need You
At Pfizer we deliver breakthroughs that change patients' lives. Research and Development is at the heart of fulfilling Pfizer's purpose as we work to translate advanced science and technologies into the therapies and vaccines that matter most. Whether you are in the discovery sciences, ensuring drug safety and efficacy or supporting clinical trials, you will apply cutting edge design and process development capabilities to accelerate and bring the best-in-class medicines to patients around the world.
What You Will Achieve
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Internal Medicine Research Unit (IMRU). The key strategic focus area within the IMRU at Pfizer is identifying novel therapies to prevent or treat chronic diseases associated with diabetes or the metabolic syndrome including obesity, renal disease and heart failure. Our goal is to build a world class research team of dedicated scientists committed to developing a deep mechanistic understanding of the metabolic pathways underlying disease pathogenesis.
As a member of the metabolic biology team, we are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to interrogate novel mechanisms of energy metabolism in cardiometabolic diseases. The successful candidate must be able to independently drive their research project as well as collaborate effectively with a wide spectrum of scientific partners representing diverse disciplines. Knowledge and experience in the study of metabolic pathways is essential and familiarity with the pathophysiology of dysmetabolic states would be advantageous. She/he will have daily interactions with a team of creative and innovative scientists, working in a supportive environment to conduct rigorous scientific and drug discovery research. Strong self-motivation, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to both lead as well as work as part of a team are essential.
How You Will Achieve It
Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Plan and execute in vivo/ ex vivo/ in vitro laboratory experiments independently (including experimental design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation).
  • Develop relevant metabolic assays to understand changes in energy generation that occur in kidney disease.
  • Quantify and translate experimental results to advance the understanding of how metabolic pathways and complex physiological systems are altered by disease and how they respond to therapeutic interventions.
  • Present research findings to Pfizer colleagues and the scientific community through publications in peer-reviewed journals and talks and posters at scientific meetings.
  • Ensure all tasks and responsibilities are carried out according to scientific and ethical standards.

Qualifications
Must-Have

  • PhD in Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry or a relevant field to the position.
  • Expertise in core molecular and biochemical laboratory techniques (qPCR, ELISA, WB/IP, plate-based assays, DNA/RNA isolation).
  • Expertise in energy metabolism and/or signaling pathways.
  • Experience with in vivo mouse models (e.g. handling, dosing, tissue collection )
  • Ability to conduct data analysis using Microsoft Excel, GraphPad Prism or equivalent software.
  • Demonstrated ability to review critically available data and to think creatively in formulating novel hypotheses.
  • Well organized, self-motivated, team oriented, ability to multitask with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Successful record of scientific accomplishments as indicated by scientific publications and/or presentations. At least one first-author publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Willingness to make a minimum 2-year commitment.
  • No more than 2 years of post-degree experience.

Nice-to-Have

  • Expertise with renal disease models and/or biology.
  • Experience in tissue digestion and staining for flow cytometry or cell sub-population separation techniques (i.e. magnetic bead-based).
  • Experience with radioactive or stable isotope-based metabolic flux analysis of energy substrates (i.e. oxidation, synthesis, uptake or A-V balance).

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • In vivo vivarium work
