The Role
Postdoctoral researcher will develop operando diagnostic hardware and software for aqueous batteries, perform micro-CT, ultrasonic, x-ray, SEM and electrochemical experiments, manage and analyze large datasets, design experiments, and communicate results via conferences and peer-reviewed publications.
Summary Generated by Built In

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Aqueous Battery Laboratory. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career researcher to contribute to cutting-edge energy storage research focused on developing advanced diagnostic tools for aqueous battery systems.

In this role, you will help develop bench scale micro-computed tomography and ultrasonic sensing methods to evaluate the state of charge and state of health of iron- and lead-based electrodes. Your research will be complemented by studies using the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and other characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder diffraction.

This is a one-year appointment centered on the development of both hardware and software tools for operando characterization under electrochemical conditions, as well as the management and analysis of large experimental datasets. The successful candidate will design and conduct experiments, interpret results, analyze data, and communicate findings through presentations at scientific conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply operando diagnostic tools for aqueous battery research

  • Design, perform, and analyze electrochemical and materials characterization experiments

  • Use imaging and sensing techniques, including micro-CT, ultrasonic methods, and x-ray-based characterization

  • Contribute to hardware and software development for experimental platforms

  • Process, interpret, and manage large datasets

  • Present research results at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed literature

  • Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary and multi-institution research environment

Position Requirements

  • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in field of materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field

  • A research background in energy storage systems

  • Experience with in-situ and operando studies

  • Skills in sample synthesis and preparation

  • Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printing, and programming for data analysis

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including a record of publications

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with x-ray-based techniques to probe structure and reactivity under electrochemical conditions

  • Training or specialization in areas such as x-ray science or battery characterization

  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary research setting
