Job Description

JOB TITLE:          Portfolio Networks Director, VCP

LOCATION:         London, Bristol, Leeds or Manchester

HOURS:               Full time

As the private equity arm of Lloyds Banking Group, LDC supports management teams across the UK to fulfil their growth ambitions and build great businesses. Since 1981, LDC has invested over £5.5bn in more than 650 SME and mid-market businesses. More details can be found at www.ldc.co.uk.

About this opportunity
This is a unique opportunity to join an established and ambitious value-creation oriented PE fund focused on investments into UK growth businesses. Their investment strategy focuses on small-mid cap businesses working closely with management teams to unlock value creation potential through improved commercial, operational and technological effectiveness.

The fund’s value creation team works through the whole lifecycle from pre-deal assessment through to exit, helping to identify, shape and execute those initiatives that underpin the growth plan.

This is a new role within the team focused on developing and actively nurturing the fund’s substantial network of Executives and Non-Executives. You’ll be supplemented by a small research focused team and would also be responsible for managing external search firm relationships.

The Fund:

An established UK mid-market PE fund headquartered in central London that has a national presence with cross sector investments in all regions of the UK.

Their investment thesis focuses on small-mid cap investments working closely with management teams to unlock value creation potential through improved commercial, operational and technological effectiveness whilst improving ESG maturity throughout the whole lifecycle of the investment partnership. Key to this is building quality and highly motivated management teams / boards drawn from a diverse background and possessing the complimentary skillsets required to deliver the growth plan.

The Role:

You’ll lead the development and nurturing of the fund’s Executive and Non-Executive network, and will form part of the senior team reporting into the Head of Value Creation. Your time will be split between proactive network development and supporting acute management needs in the portfolio – either at point of deal or subsequently throughout the investment period.

The developed network should be the first port of call when the fund is seeking senior hires into new or existing portfolio of near 100 companies, with this role initially being supported by two research-oriented resource.  You’ll also be responsible for negotiating and managing central LDC search relationships as these would still form an integral part of the go forward.

The role will not include formal pre-deal assessment (MDD) or post deal people strategy (e.g. comp design, succession planning) so as not to dilute from primary objective. In the short to midterm this requirement will continue to be serviced by external partners or fractional/contracting CPO resource, albeit could provide onward opportunity for further internal team expansion under this new network leadership role.

You’ll work closely with portfolio management and NXEs alongside other members of the LDC VCP, investment and portfolio teams plus trusted external partners. The role has strong visibility into the fund CEO and Executive Committee.

If successful, the new function should reduce hiring lead times and costs but, most importantly, increase in quality (and thus likely success) of management teams. Ancillary benefits could include deal origination from network, potential use of network to support DD effort and/or further supporting fund’s differentiated value creation proposition.

What you’ll need

  • We’re looking for someone who has a proven track record in Private Equity - please note this is essential - as well as PE community management experience plus an understanding of search firm use
  • Needs to be a skilled relationship builder with gravitas to positively influence portfolio management teams and senior internal stakeholders
  • Must have hands on experience of building a system to support a fund’s ambition that includes combining people, process and technology elements
  • Experience with CRM (and other relevant) tool selection and evolution would be highly advantageous
  • Experience in team management and mentoring along with management of third-party partners including contractual and pricing negotiations
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to work independently on concurrent projects with minimal supervision or direction and be able to work nationally as required
  • Familiarity of operating in a PE environment would be very desirable, as would awareness of due diligence processes
