Job Description

Performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing, analysis, and associated interventions, under the general oversight of a clinician.

Job Responsibility

1.Interviews patient and gathers patient history, physical information, medications, procedure requests and study protocols. Identifies and assesses any signs, symptoms, special factors and co-morbid conditions. Completes and verifies documentation. 2.Provides patient education, communicates procedure, and answers questions to ease apprehension and produce comfort and cooperation.
3.Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning. Applies electrodes and sensors according to policy and procedure.
4. Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations and adjustments. Performs positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting. Follows procedural protocols to ensure accurate polysomnographic data acquisition. Identifies and reports signal abnormalities.
5.Documents routine observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, procedural changes and other significant events in order to facilitate interpretation and scoring of polysomnograph results.
6.Documents daytime polysomnographic recordings, such as polysomnograph (PSG), Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) studies. Generates reports of sleep/wake and clinical event data tabulations.
7. Implements appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.
8.Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment and education of all age groups.
9.Complies with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control issues.
10.Disinfects and performs preventative maintenance on equipment according to established protocols. Troubleshoots equipment issues and reports malfunctions to management.
11.Completes required billing information forms, as required.
12.Scores sleep/wake stages following established policies and procedures. Scores clinical events including respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc., within center specific protocols. Generates accurate reports for study interpretation. Performs related duties as required.

Job Qualification

Associates of Science Degree, required. Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) AND authorized as a Polysomnographic Technologist in New York State, required.
OR
Licensed in Respiratory Therapy by New York State AND Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), required.
Basic Life Support for healthcare providers (BLS), required.
Minimum of three (3) months prior work experience in an accredited sleep center, required.

About the Team

Long Island Jewish Valley Stream (LIJVS), a division of Long Island Jewish Medical Center, is a 284 licensed-bed, full-service community hospital and a designated Stroke Center certified by the American Heart Association. LIJVS became a premier destination for orthopedic care by opening a state-of-the-art Orthopedic Hospital. LIJVS is the first hospital on Long Island to receive dual accreditation by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery and a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. The Critical Care Units at LIJVS have achieved the Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the first community hospiral at Northwell to achieve this award. Skills Required

  • Associate of Science degree
  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification and authorization as a Polysomnographic Technologist in New York State
  • New York State respiratory therapy license and Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS) certification, as an alternative qualification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers
  • At least three months of prior work experience in an accredited sleep center
