The Podiatrist provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, deformities, and disorders of the human foot within a correctional healthcare setting. The role includes both conservative and surgical interventions, patient education, and collaboration with healthcare and correctional staff to ensure safe, effective, and compliant care.

Qualifications

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat foot conditions, including tumors, ulcers, fractures, skin or nail diseases, and congenital or acquired deformities.
  • Utilize diagnostic aids, such as X-rays, blood tests, and urinalysis, to support patient assessments.
  • Provide conservative and surgical treatments for foot disorders, including corns, calluses, ingrown nails, bunions, cysts, abscesses, and shortened tendons.
  • Correct deformities through methods such as plaster casts, strappings, prosthetic appliances, and corrective footwear.
  • Prescribe medications as appropriate; administer local anesthetics when indicated.
  • Advise patients on foot care, preventive strategies, and ongoing treatment plans to minimize recurrence of disorders.
  • Refer patients to physicians for systemic conditions detected in the feet or legs, including arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disorders.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all patient encounters, procedures, and treatments.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and continuing education programs.
  • Collaborate with medical, nursing, and security staff to ensure safe and effective patient care in a correctional environment.

Education & Licensure

  • Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) or equivalent.
  • Current, unrestricted license to practice podiatric medicine in the applicable state.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional podiatric practice preferred.
  • Experience in correctional healthcare preferred.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records and medical documentation standards.

  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities
  • Completes required orientation as directed by the facility
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment
  • Follows facility and CFG Health Systems Occurrence Protocol
  • Upholds HIPAA and PREA regulations
  • Punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed shifts
  • Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility

Skills Required
