The PMO Director is responsible for establishing, leading, and evolving the enterprise Project Management Office (PMO) to ensure strategic alignment, governance excellence, portfolio visibility, and successful delivery of complex organisational programmes.
The role provides executive oversight of portfolio governance, programme controls, operational PMO services, innovation in delivery practice, digital enablement, and cross-organisation collaboration. The PMO Director ensures that change initiatives are delivered predictably, efficiently, and in alignment with strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Portfolio Leadership
Define and implement the PMO vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap.
Ensure portfolio alignment with organisational strategy and investment priorities.
Lead enterprise prioritisation, portfolio planning, and demand management.
Provide executive insight into portfolio health, dependencies, capacity, and risk exposure.
Act as senior advisor to ExCo and Board on delivery confidence.
2. Governance & Programme Controls
Establish and oversee enterprise governance frameworks and stage-gate processes.
Ensure robust cost, schedule, risk, and performance controls across programmes.
Provide independent assurance and performance challenge.
Maintain consistency of reporting standards, metrics, and controls across all portfolios.
3. Portfolio Performance & Benefits Realisation
Oversee portfolio financial management and benefits tracking.
Ensure business cases are robust, measurable, and aligned to value delivery.
Monitor portfolio performance KPIs and corrective action plans.
Drive continuous improvement in delivery predictability and maturity.
4. PMO Operations & Service Delivery
Lead the operational PMO function including planning, reporting, governance administration, tooling, and resource management.
Ensure effective demand management and enterprise resource capacity planning.
Implement portfolio management systems and digital reporting solutions.
Standardise processes and ensure scalable PMO services.
5. Programme Excellence & Innovation
Build organisational capability in project and programme delivery.
Champion modern delivery approaches (Agile, hybrid, digital enablement).
Drive innovation in planning, controls, reporting, and collaboration.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives and maturity uplift programmes.
6. Digital & Technology Enablement
Oversee digital strategy for the PMO including tooling, data analytics, and automation.
Ensure integration of portfolio systems and digital dashboards.
Leverage data insights to improve decision-making and forecasting.
Sponsor digital transformation initiatives that enhance delivery performance.
7. Leadership & Culture
Provide inspirational leadership to senior direct reports.
Foster a high-performance, accountable, and collaborative delivery culture.
Develop succession pipelines and capability frameworks.
Model enterprise leadership behaviours and values.
