Senior Database Administrator and Reliability Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Administer and configure Cloud SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Snowflake databases in production environments.

  • Participate in gathering business and technical requirements for database solutions across projects and platforms.

  • Design and implement database architectures across AWS (RDS, Aurora) and Azure managed database services leveraging cloud-native capabilities.

  • Administer user security roles, profiles, and access permissions including creating and managing role-based access controls across all database platforms.

  • Conduct regular vulnerability assessments, implement remediation, and perform security hardening to maintain compliance with SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS standards.

  • Provide architectural recommendations to application teams on database design, schema optimization, and technology selection for new and existing solutions.

  • Provide business and IT support for database-related issues, collaborating with application teams across the organization for deployment, troubleshooting, and post-deployment validation.

  • Design and optimize operational workflows including backup, recovery, replication, high-availability, performance tuning and disaster recovery plans with defined RTO/RPO targets.

  • Perform new technology exploration to evaluate fit of emerging database platforms and cloud services for strategic and tactical program needs.

  • Document and implement change control following best practices for system maintenance, configuration, development, testing, and migration.

  • Perform operational tasks such as monitoring database performance and implementing solutions for continuous performance improvement.

  • Develop and maintain Python scripts and automation tools to eliminate manual processes and streamline repetitive DBA tasks.

  • Create Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using Terraform or CloudFormation to automate provisioning, monitoring, alerting, and failover procedures.

  • Collaborate with engineering and application teams to support development, deployments, and platform-level initiatives.

  • Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of database solutions across the enterprise.

  • Follow software engineering best practices including version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing for all database-related automation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or Technology, or related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in database administration across multiple platforms in production environments.

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL Server 2016+, PostgreSQL 11+, and Snowflake including administration, performance tuning, replication, and troubleshooting.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of AWS (RDS, Redshift, Lambda, VPC) and Azure (SQL Database, Managed Databases) cloud database platforms, including current and emerging services.

  • Subject Matter Expertise in one or more database platforms (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Snowflake) with ability to administer and maintain multiple platforms simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement and maintain database security controls including encryption, authentication, access management, and vulnerability remediation.

  • Ability to obtain, analyze, and synthesize information from multiple sources to support architecture recommendations and technical decision-making.

  • Proficiency in Python scripting and automation tools for developing database automation, monitoring, and compliance solutions.

  • Proficiency in Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation and familiarity with Docker and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Analytical mindset with critical thinking, research, problem-solving, and decision-making skills focused on results.

  • Proficiency in organization and time management skills with a proven track record of meeting deadlines and managing on-call production support commitments.

  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication skills with ability to clearly convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio) and database tools (SQL Server Management Studio, SSMS, SSIS, SSRS, Visual Studio).

  • Knowledge of monitoring and observability practices using tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or CloudWatch appropriate for database platforms.

  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix and Windows server administration fundamentals supporting database infrastructure.

  • Ability to test database functionality through regression, smoke testing, and performance validation practices.

  • Fundamental understanding of DevOps, SRE principles, and database migration best practices (on-premises to cloud) is a plus.
