Provides leadership, management and technical expertise to the Smith-Midland Corporation of South Carolina manufacturing operations team. Directs and manages the manufacturing operations in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner. Monitors and controls operations to achieve safety, quality, schedule, and cost goals. This position will report to the General Manager.  

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the day-to-day activities of the manufacturing departments, including the utility plants, batch plant, carpentry shop, steel shop, welding shop, yard, finishing and material handling.
  • Through managers and supervisors directs a work force of 30-50. Attends to all personnel matters in their area of responsibility to achieve a motivated, productive and capable workforce. Administers company rules and procedures for the personnel under their responsibility.
  • In close coordination with engineering, sales, and shipping, sets up and updates schedules, assigns resources and effectively follows up on progress to meet manufacturing and shipping deadlines.
  • Monitors the performance and productive output of operations and takes corrective action as required, makes recommendations and implements productivity improvement initiatives and equipment upgrades.
  • Produces various reports required for accounting purposes and to monitor the productive output of their area of responsibility.
  • Makes products of high quality that meet or exceed specifications, company standards and expectations. Strives to continuously improve the quality of products.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and promotes safe work practices. Communicates and implements company and regulatory safety policies and standards.
  • Ensures proper operation of all equipment, follows up on its condition and coordinates required repairs with maintenance to ensure the preservation of capital and minimization of downtime. Also maintains high standards of housekeeping.
  • Coordinates with purchasing to maintain a timely supply of all materials required for uninterrupted production.
  • Uses standard work and standard work auditing to ensure quality programs are maintained and continuously advanced.
Qualifications
  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
    • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA) can be beneficial
  • Experience
    • 5-10 years of experience in the precast concrete industry
    • Prior management or supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Technical Knowledge
    • In-depth understanding of precast concrete production processes
    • Familiarity with quality control standards and testing procedures
    • Knowledge of relevant industry regulations and safety standards
  • Skills and Competencies
    • Strong leadership and team management abilities
    • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
    • Effective communication (both written and verbal)
    • Proficiency in project management and scheduling
    • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Certifications (Preferred but not required)
    • Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) certification
    • OSHA safety certification
  • Additional qualifications
    • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles
    • Proficiency with ERP systems and production management software
    • Budget management and cost control experience

Skills Required
