Job Overview

The primary purpose of the Plant Manager is to direct and manage all plant operations with overall responsibilities for production, maintenance, quality, P&L, and other production-related activities. 


Job Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage plant operations for production, maintenance, quality, and shipping and receiving.
  • Coordinate plant activities through planning with departmental managers to ensure total manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Develop and control profits, plans, and budget.
  • Implement cost effective systems of control over capital, operating expenditures, manpower, wages, and salaries.
  • Manage capital asset maintenance.
  • Establish and monitor overall plant performance for production and quality standards.
  • Control and minimize labor overtime, premium freight, and repair expenses.
  • Maintain existing plant facilities and equipment; replace or adjust plant facilities and equipment when necessary.
  • Provide leadership and training to accomplish the company goals and objectives.
  • Always promote safety and health awareness.
  • Monitor safety and health regulations to ensure compliance with federal and state safety and health regulations.
  • Identify plant safety training needs and works with corporate safety to develop and coordinate safety training programs.
  • Implement and maintain preventative maintenance programs.
  • Incorporate shop floor organization and plant cleanliness among plant personnel.
  • Provide direction, development, and leadership to production supervisors.
  • Limited travel.
  • On-call continuously, frequently called back to the plant during off-duty hours.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Education-Experience Required

  • Minimum 5-7 years plant management experience.
  • Some project management experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or five years plant/general management experience including LEAN in a manufacturing environment.
  • Good understanding of LEAN tools to teach, create, implement, and sustain in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong ability to coach, mentor, develop, and lead team members.
  • Experience and ability to run a P&L manufacturing business.
  • Must possess ability to motivate a workforce including performance management, recruiting, retention and engagement.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint & Outlook
  • Must exercise continuous leadership to focus plant efforts on priorities.
  • Must deal with constantly shifting priorities.
  • Must be technically proficient to "troubleshoot" mechanical and chemical upsets.
  • Ability to ensure safety, environmental and health concerns are address efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to adhere to Corporate and Plant policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Experience dealing with customers' expectations, prevention of problems, and striving for continuous improvement resulting in improved results for themselves, customers, employees as well as the company.
  • Conflict resolution abilities.
  • Excellent time management.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.

Physical Demands

  • Talk and hear, read, write understand and communicate by telephone.
  • Frequently use hands for typing, 10-key operation, telephone dialing.  Regular use of hands for feeling, grasping, or manipulating objects, tools, or controls.  Occasional using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly sit, stand, walk, occasionally required to climb, or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, move over uneven surfaces.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lift items up to 50lbs.

Skills Required

  • Minimum 5–7 years of plant management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or five years of plant/general management experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing and ability to teach, implement, and sustain Lean tools
  • Experience managing a manufacturing business P&L
  • Ability to coach, mentor, develop, motivate, and lead employees
  • Experience with performance management, recruiting, retention, and employee engagement
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
