Job Summary:
This position is responsible for assessing the ground conditions, digging trenches, assembling pipes, and laying pipes in accordance with city ordinances. Perform tasks involving physical labor at building, highway, and heavy construction projects, tunnel and shaft excavations, and demolition sites.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Dig trenches when pipes need to be laid beneath the earth, and cover the pipes once they are in place with dirt or other similar materials.
• Remove old piping systems, seal joints, install auxiliary lines, and align and position pipes to prepare them for trenches.
• Operate machinery to dig trenches to desired or required depths, if assigned to be on the ground, dig by hand or using trenching tools.
• Install new pipes around a property using an eclectic assortment of tools, including transit levels, grade rods, and levels.
• Install and use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels.
• Clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, and remove asbestos, lead, and other hazardous waste materials.
• Operate mechanized equipment such as pickup trucks, rollers, tandem dump trucks, front-end loaders, and backhoes.
• Measure the surrounding area where the pipes are to be installed and cut pipes to match the allotted area.
• Connect multiple pipes together by sealing joints, which will entail using glue, cement, or welding devices.
• Locate existing pipes around a property that needs to be removed by utilizing radio or magnetic indicators.
• Drill holes into a property’s pipeline to install auxiliary cables and other devices into the system.
• Load, unload, identify, and distribute building materials to the appropriate location according to project plans and specifications.
• Operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments.
• Operate pickup trucks and rollers frequently whenever materials need to be transported away from the worksite.
• Train other pipelayers in the process and supervise new hires initially to ensure they can work independently.
• Collaborate and train other employees.
• Adheres to procedures, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
• Regular attendance is required according to company policy to ensure the crew can operate at a normal efficiency level.
• Follow instructions and comprehend construction needs.
• Performs other duties of a similar or related nature as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Basic use and knowledge of common hand tools and equipment
• Detailed knowledge of construction and pipe fitting techniques.
• Knowledge of sewer systems, storm drains, and water mains.
• Experience with machine-operated trenching tools.
• Able to think logically about work at hand and compare site conditions with project designs.
• Able to work at night, overtime, and weekends as needed.
• Valid driver’s license with a clear MVR
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or GED.
• Proven work experience as a pipe layer.
• Minimum two (2) years’ field experience in the construction industry.
Physical Requirements:
• Frequent walking on uneven surfaces, including ground in varying weather conditions.
• Work in various weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
• May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
• Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance repeatedly or continually throughout shift.
• Able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
• Regularly work near heavy equipment, power tools, and moving machinery.
• Exposure to outdoor environment with machinery/equipment in the surrounding area.
• Some pipe layers may be exposed to lead-based paint, asbestos, or other hazardous substances during their work, primarily when they work in confined spaces.
• Able to push/pull 80+ lbs.
• Able to lift/carry 80+ lbs.
• Able to wear personal protective equipment, including steel-toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.
• Able to safely operate a motor vehicle.

This position routinely requires the use of personal and/or company vehicles on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and maintain an acceptable driving record. Employees in this position may be subject to random Motor Vehicle Record and alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
