The Physician will provide comprehensive medical care to patients in a correctional healthcare setting (city jail), including diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with a wide range of medical conditions. 

Position:    Primary Care Physician

Schedule: 16 Hours (2 days per week)

Location: Roanoke City Jail

  • Our EMR system is very user-friendly with a dedicated in-house support team to train and troubleshoot any issues as needed.

  • Most new arrivals to the detention center will be released or bonded out in days.

How YOU can Make an Impact:

  • Provide Comprehensive Medical Care: Deliver high-quality, evidence-based medical care to incarcerated individuals, diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of physical and mental health conditions in compliance with facility policies, clinical guidelines, and medical best practices. 

  • Medical Assessments and Diagnosis: Conduct thorough medical assessments, including physical exams and health histories, to diagnose and develop individualized treatment plans for patients. Address both acute and chronic medical conditions, offering appropriate interventions and medications. 

  • Prescribe Medications and Treatments: Prescribe medications, therapies, and other medical interventions as necessary, ensuring safe and effective treatment for patients. Monitor and adjust treatment plans based on patient progress and evolving health needs. 

  • Collaborate with Healthcare Team: Work closely with physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated, holistic care for inmates. Participate in case discussions and treatment plan development, ensuring a collaborative approach to patient care. 

  • Mental Health Support: Provide medical and psychiatric care for patients with mental health conditions, working in collaboration with mental health specialists to ensure the best outcomes for individuals with dual medical and psychiatric diagnoses. 

  • Emergency Care and Crisis Intervention: Respond to and manage medical emergencies, including trauma, psychiatric crises, and other urgent health situations, ensuring immediate, effective interventions. Provide leadership in emergency medical responses. 

  • Health Education and Patient Advocacy: Educate patients on managing chronic conditions, preventing health issues, and understanding treatment plans. Advocate for inmate health needs and contribute to a supportive environment for all individuals in care. 

  • Maintain Patient Records and Documentation: Accurately document all patient interactions, assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes in accordance with facility protocols and HIPAA regulations. Ensure documentation is complete, timely, and compliant with legal and regulatory standards. 

  • Quality Improvement and Policy Adherence: Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and clinical outcomes. Adhere to infection control, safety, and security protocols while maintaining high standards of care within the correctional environment. 

  • Staff Education and Mentorship: Provide education, mentorship, and guidance to healthcare staff, including physicians, nurses, and other providers, on best practices, medical protocols, and evolving standards of care. 

  • Leadership in Healthcare Operations: Serve as a medical leader within the facility, supporting and mentoring other healthcare providers. Assist in identifying opportunities for improving care delivery, workflow, and the overall healthcare environment. 

  • On-Call and After-Hours Care: Provide on-call services as needed, including after-hours and weekend care, to ensure continuity of care and address urgent healthcare needs of inmates. 

  • Collaboration with Correctional Staff: Work alongside correctional officers and facility leadership to ensure that the healthcare needs of inmates are met while maintaining security and safety within the correctional setting. Address any barriers to care resulting from the correctional environment. 

  • Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards: Uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, ensuring that all medical practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as institutional policies. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and follow all legal and ethical guidelines in healthcare delivery. 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

What we Ask of YOU:

  • A current, valid, and unrestricted state license, certification, and/or credential authorizing practice in the applicable clinical role (e.g., MD, DO, DDS, DMD, NP, PA, RN, LPN, LMHP, etc.) is required.A High School diploma or GED is required. 

  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare, or a related field is preferred for applicable roles. 

  • For advanced clinical roles, completion of an accredited graduate or professional program (e.g., medical school, dental school, nurse practitioner program, etc.) is required. 

  • A current, valid DEA registration, if applicable. 

  • Board certification in a relevant specialty is preferred, if applicable. 

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical practice, with at least 1-2 years in a correctional healthcare or underserved population setting preferred. 

  • Experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, and providing healthcare services in a managed care or correctional facility setting is highly preferred. 

  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved).
