Pelican Plasma is seeking to serve as a physician substitute for our new plasma donation center in south Shreveport.  Providing excellent customer service and following established safety and quality guidelines, the physician substitute will perform medical evaluations of prospective donors to determine suitability for plasma donation and provide limited medical care within their scope of practice, consistent with licensure and training and in accordance with standing delegation orders.

Our mission is “connecting donors and the lives they impact!” The plasma we collect from donors is used for development of lifesaving therapies and treatments.  The physician substitute will work collaboratively with our healthcare team, integrating our mission and values into daily decisions, behaviors and actions.  The ideal candidate champions teamwork, communication and continuous improvement and has a passion for service to our community.

Job Duties include:


  • Possess a current LPN/LVN or RN license in the state in which the center operates; or
  • Current EMS licensure plus 1 year of experience
  • Meets and exceeds customer expectations through appropriate interaction and responsiveness to donor needs
  • Adheres to established quality practices while continually seeking to improve work performance
  • Performs medical assessment and evaluation of prospective donors to determine suitability for plasmapheresis procedure in accordance with the FDA, OSHA, CLIA and cGMP and Company policies
  • Reviews test results and consults with Medical Director on any unusual, abnormal or elevated test results and non-routine situations; counsels donors with abnormal test results and defers them accordingly
  • Provides immediate medical care for adverse reactions or injuries; follows-up with donor as appropriate
  • Ensures timely and accurate documentation in donor record management system
  • Ensures all medical incidents are documented on the prescribed form and submitted to Medical Director and corporate Risk Manager
  • May supervise phlebotomy technicians performing collection procedures, assisting as needed
  • May perform automated plasmapheresis collection procedures
  • Provides assistance and information to donor during and following collection process, including post donation care
  • May assist in recruitment, scheduling and education of plasma donors
  • Maintains the Center's emergency medical kit and equipment in accordance with SOP's to ensure supplies and equipment are current and functioning properly
  • Promotes safety in all actions, ensuring EHS and OSHA compliance
  • Maintains confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information
  • Participates and/or leads various meetings, such as in-service training, continuing education programs, staff meetings, and safety meetings
  • Performs computer data entry and general administrative duties with attention to accuracy and quality assurance
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Current CPR/first aid certification required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to learn and utilize electronic donor record management system
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively evaluate patients and prospective donors, performing blood pressure, temperature, pulse, hemoglobin and hematocrit determinations according to established SOPs
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully perform effective phlebotomy procedures, performing site care and maintaining sterility of central venous access
  • Demonstrated ability to remain alert and react spontaneously to any medical emergency situation
  • Possess a working knowledge of FDA regulations governing plasma centers, Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA), Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and current Good Manufacturing Procedures (cGMP) guidelines for laboratory operations.  
  • Demonstrate a positive approach toward donors, technicians and other staff members, acting in a highly professional manner at all times.
  • Must be self-motivated, dependable and punctual
  • Must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate leadership and supervisory skills.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS / ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is generally performed in the plasma center
  • Ability to pull and lift equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs., unassisted. 
  • Ability to perform duties requiring sitting, standing and bending for long periods of time without relief
  • Physical ability to perform phlebotomy and CPR
  • Requires visual observation of equipment operation and the use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls
  • Work involves exposure to infectious diseases from blood and blood products

 

Skills Required

  • Current LPN/LVN or RN license in the state where the center operates
  • Current EMS licensure plus 1 year of experience (alternative to nursing license)
  • Current CPR/first aid certification
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and ability to learn electronic donor record management systems
  • Ability to perform medical assessments (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, hemoglobin, hematocrit) per SOPs
  • Demonstrated phlebotomy skills, site care, and maintaining sterility of central venous access
  • Ability to provide immediate care for adverse reactions and perform CPR
  • Working knowledge of FDA regulations, PPTA, OSHA and cGMP for plasma center operations
  • Ability to lift and pull equipment/supplies up to 50 lbs and perform prolonged standing/sitting/bending
  • Excellent communication, leadership and supervisory skills; professionalism and dependability
  • May supervise phlebotomy technicians performing collection procedures
  • May perform automated plasmapheresis collection procedures
  • May assist in donor recruitment, scheduling and education
