The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Radiologist is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic imaging interpretation and consultation focused on diseases and injuries involving bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissues. The physician collaborates closely with orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, rheumatology, oncology, emergency medicine, primary care, and rehabilitation services to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.The MSK Radiologist performs and interprets advanced musculoskeletal imaging studies, participates in multidisciplinary conferences, contributes to quality improvement initiatives, and supports educational and research activities as appropriate.
Essential Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Interpret musculoskeletal imaging examinations, including:
- Digital Radiography (X-ray)
- Computed Tomography (CT)
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- Ultrasound
- Interpret general diagnostic radiology examinations as required by departmental needs.
- Provide timely, accurate, and clinically relevant reports.
- Communicate urgent or unexpected findings directly to referring providers.
- Participate in multidisciplinary orthopedic, oncology, sports medicine, and trauma conferences.
- Provide imaging consultation to referring physicians.
- Participate in peer review and quality assurance activities.
Procedural Responsibilities
May perform image-guided procedures including:
- Joint aspirations
- Joint injections
- Soft tissue aspirations
- Tendon sheath injections
- Bursal injections
- Ultrasound-guided procedures
- CT-guided musculoskeletal biopsies
- Bone biopsies
- Radiofrequency ablation and other minimally invasive MSK procedures (where applicable)
Collaboration
Collaborate with:

Serve as an imaging consultant to assist with appropriate imaging utilization and clinical decision-making.

- State and federal regulations
- Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives.
- Support radiation dose optimization and MRI safety programs.
- Participate in peer learning and discrepancy review programs.
Education
- Educate residents, fellows, medical students, and allied health professionals (where applicable).
- Participate in continuing medical education activities.
- Present educational conferences and case reviews.
- Support physician and technologist education regarding musculoskeletal imaging protocols.
Research (Optional)
Depending on organizational expectations:
- Participate in clinical research.
- Publish scholarly work.
- Present at regional or national meetings.
- Support clinical trials involving musculoskeletal imaging.
Qualifications
Required
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
- Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Radiology Residency
- Completion of an accredited Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Diagnostic Radiology
- Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure
- Eligible for hospital medical staff privileges
- DEA registration (if procedural practice requires)
Preferred
- CAQ or advanced expertise in Musculoskeletal Imaging
- Experience with advanced MRI techniques
- Experience performing image-guided musculoskeletal procedures
- Academic teaching experience
- Research experience
- Experience with AI-enabled imaging workflow tools

Call Responsibilities
- Participate in departmental call rotation as assigned.
- Provide after-hours consultation for urgent musculoskeletal imaging studies.
- Support trauma and emergency imaging coverage as required.
