The Role

Roche fosters diversity, equity and inclusion, representing the communities we serve. When dealing with healthcare on a global scale, diversity is an essential ingredient to success. We believe that inclusion is key to understanding people’s varied healthcare needs. Together, we embrace individuality and share a passion for exceptional care. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

Exploring the Functional Impact of Soluble Inflammation Regulators on Microglia, Astrocytes, and Neurons

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.

The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) is a highly competitive student research program at Roche. It offers the most talented postgraduate PhD and medical degree students the opportunity to be fully integrated into our interdisciplinary and international industry R&D environment. As a RiSE student you will enhance your competencies, gain valuable work experience with us, and eventually become part of a world-wide network of RiSE Alumni.

Join the Neuroscience and Rare Diseases Discovery team at Roche to help develop treatments for serious neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and more.

As RiSE student in the NRD DTA you will join our group in the Neurotechnology section and perform discovery lab work testing the function of soluble regulators of inflammation on the microglia-astrocyte-neuron axis. You will have access to state-of-the art scientific infrastructure and be hosted and mentored by an experienced Roche scientist who will guide you through your research and provide you with a collaborative network.

The opportunity

  • Differentiate and co-culture microglia, astrocyte and neurons iPSC-derived and perform relevant assays to assess their function
  • Pioneer the study of novel molecular mechanisms in vitro
  • Conduct laboratory research and work closely within a team composed of scientists, research associates and other students
  • Coordinate collaborations with scientists from other groups to generate impactful data
  • Organize and critically present your data at internal meetings

Who You Are

You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. Where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.

Moreover you are/have:

  • Enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program at a university and are looking to expand your experience with an industry internship internship (must be enrolled at university for 50% of the duration of your stay at Roche, PhD thesis can’t be defended in the first half of the internship). Applications from individuals not enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program will not be considered.
  • Extensive expertise in stem cell handling and applications. Experience with glial and neural models is a plus
  • Experience with basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques
  • Experience with microscopy techniques
  • Curious in exploring new molecular mechanisms in complex in vitro systems
  • Strong team player with excellent collaboration skills

Information about application documents and start date:

The preferred start date of the internship is April 2025 or upon availability.

Applications need to include a CV and a cover letter, as well as a letter from your academic supervisor supporting your application to the RiSE Program.

Please note that due to regulations non-EU/EFTA citizens have to provide a certificate from the university stating that an industry internship is mandatory as part of the university training.
