You'll be joining a program that's growing. This is a new position, added to meet expanding case volume at St. Mary's Medical Center — Essentia Health's flagship tertiary care facility in Duluth. You're not stepping into someone else's seat or backfilling a gap. You're being added because the work is growing and the team needs the support.
You'll do the full scope of perfusion. Cardiopulmonary bypass, LVAD and RVAD support, ECMO, hypothermic re-warming, hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy, and off-pump standby. Adolescent through elderly. If you want to keep your hands on the full breadth of what perfusion can do — including ECMO, which a lot of programs don't offer — this is that program.
You'll work with a team that respects perfusion. You'll be part of a tight cardiac surgery group at St. Mary's — surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and a perfusion team that backs each other up. Day Rotation shift with on-call standby coverage. Real coverage, real support.

You'll live somewhere most people only get to visit. The city sits on a hill overlooking Lake Superior, with UMD and St. Scholastica keeping it vibrant and a great food and arts scene for its size, but you can be on a trail or on the water in fifteen minutes. Cost of living is well below the Twin Cities. Winters are real, but so are the people who live here.
What You Will Do:
- Perform clinical cardiopulmonary bypass during open-heart surgery.
- Provide extracorporeal circulation support during LVAD, RVAD, and ECMO procedures.
- Manage hypothermic re-warming and hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy.
- Stand by for off-pump cardiac procedures, ready to initiate bypass when clinically indicated.
- Collaborate closely with cardiac surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and the broader OR team.
- Maintain perfusion equipment and documentation in line with depart.
What Makes You a Strong Fit:
- Experience with adult cardiac surgery, including LVAD/RVAD and ECMO support.
- New graduates of accredited perfusion programs are encouraged to apply — we'll support you through certification.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary surgical team.
