People Technology Application Engineer

People Technology is evolving rapidly from a traditional HRIS function into a high-leverage Product & Engineering Engine. As part of our Build HR Technology & Analytics team, we are looking for a People Technology Applications Engineer based out of our Amsterdam office.

In this role, you will lead the application and integration engineering layer for our People organization. You will design, build, and maintain custom applications, API middleware, automated workflows, and system-to-system integrations across our Workday ecosystem and enterprise tools. You will think beyond individual SaaS platforms to establish scalable application architecture, low-code/custom code solutions, and seamless user experiences.

• Engineer application & integration solutions: Design, develop, and maintain custom applications, programmatic API integrations, webhooks, and middleware connecting Workday HCM with Greenhouse, Qualtrics, Docebo, Slack, and internal platforms.
• Extend platform capabilities: Build custom app extensions and tailored UI/UX workflows utilizing Workday Extend, Python frameworks, and modern low-code/no-code platforms.
• Automate operational friction: Follow our "simplify first, then automate" philosophy to eliminate point-to-point manual processes and technical debt. Research, prototype, and deploy automated workflows and custom AI agents (e.g., using Google Vertex AI / Gemini Enterprise). You are curious about emerging technologies (like generative AI and automated agents) and know when they genuinely add business value.
• Design for security, privacy, and governance: Embed strict access controls, data security, and compliance (GDPR) into all software architectures, ensuring responsible boundaries for handling employee data.  You treat security, privacy, and system governance as fundamental engineering requirements.
• Set engineering standards & documentation: Establish clear software engineering practices, API specifications, and maintainable technical documentation so solutions can be easily supported and scaled.  You move comfortably between technical architecture details and broad operational context.
• Partner across Product & Engineering: Collaborate closely with Core People Tech specialists, Data Engineers, Security, and HR functional leads to translate complex business needs into clean technical solutions. You start with the problem rather than forcing a specific technology, balancing speed with long-term code maintainability.

• Software Engineering Expertise: 5+ years of software development, application engineering, or integration engineering experience in an international environment.
• Programming & API Proficiency: Strong hands-on proficiency in Python (FastAPI/Flask) and web technology fundamentals (REST APIs, JSON, Webhooks, OAuth, GraphQL).
• Integration & Middleware Tech: Demonstrated experience with integration platforms (iPaaS), event-driven architectures, or middleware tools.
• HRIS & Ecosystem Knowledge: Hands-on experience or familiarity with enterprise SaaS platforms (Workday APIs, Workday Extend, Studio, or similar cloud ecosystems).
• Security-First Mindset: In-depth knowledge of application security, fine-grained access management, and privacy-by-design principles.
• Engineering Mindset & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills, strong problem-solving ability, and a drive to challenge requirements constructively to deliver scalable architectures.

• Workday and our broader SaaS ecosystem are connected through reliable, maintainable API integrations rather than brittle point-to-point fixes.
• Repetitive manual tasks and system friction are systematically eliminated through clean Python automation and custom app extensions.
• Reusable application foundations, middleware, and documentation exist, allowing new People Tech features to be built faster.
• Security and privacy boundaries are seamlessly embedded into every deployed application and integration.
