The Job/What You’ll Do:
The People Operations & Payroll Specialist is a dual role within our People Shared Services Team, reporting to our Manager, Payroll Operations and for supporting the smooth execution of payroll processes and providing operational assistance across key HR functions, including onboarding, employee experience, and general HR service support.
This is a full-time position in our Phoenix, AZ office with a hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities:
- Provide first-level HR Service Desk support for employee inquiries regarding HR and payroll policies, within SLA, or assign to the appropriate 2nd-level HR representative
- Assist in resolving employee issues and inquiries in a professional and confidential manner
- Process incoming HR and Payroll mail
- Assist with unemployment and disability claims processing
- Assist with employee and contractor onboarding and offboarding procedures
- Complete I-9 verifications for new hires in Phoenix, AZ, or Remote
- Assisting with background checks review
- Serve as back-up for People Operations Generalists' tasks
- Participate in projects as assigned
- Ad-hoc duties as assigned
- Support with bi-weekly, multi-state (42+) process for 1,000+ employees, including supplemental pay cycles (monthly, quarterly, etc.), ensuring accuracy and timelines
- Maintain accurate employee data in the payroll system, including new hires, terminations and changes to deductions (e.g., garnishes, levies)
- Process time and attendance transactions and ensure proper integration with payroll
- Process payments for all terminations within the resident state regulations
- Review and approve W-4 and state withholding tax elections
- Assist in research and resolution of payroll-related problems, unexpected results or process flaws, as well as with quarterly and annual payroll tax filings and returns
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- 2-3 years of experience in an HR, payroll, or related administrative support role
- Hands-on experience with HRIS platforms and online payroll systems (Workday and ADP Smart Compliance are a plus)
- Working knowledge of HR and payroll fundamentals
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (e.g., formulas, filters, basic data analysis, VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, auto-filters, etc.)
- Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
- Detail-oriented, even in high-volume or fast-paced environments
- Clear, professional communication skills and a customer-focused mindset
- Basic understanding of employment laws and HR compliance
Education & Experience:
- BA/BS degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance or equivalent work experience
Compensation: The Base Salary range for this position is between $65,000-$80,000.
This information reflects a base salary range that AssetMark reasonably expects to pay for the position based on a number of factors which may include job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and actual work location. This position will also be eligible for additional variable incentive compensation and competitive benefits.
