About the role
We’re seeking a Payroll Functional Consultant to play a pivotal role in shaping and safeguarding the technical integrity of our payroll systems. As a senior technical leader within the Payroll team, you’ll take ownership of the end-to-end payroll systems landscape, ensuring accuracy, compliance and scalability while supporting a high performing payroll function.
This is a hands-on role that blends deep payroll systems expertise with leadership and influence. You’ll partner closely with the Head of Payroll, ERP technical teams and key stakeholders across People & Culture, Finance and Legal to deliver system enhancements, manage complex investigations and drive continuous improvement.

Day-to-day, you will:
- Lead the technical delivery and optimisation of payroll systems, ensuring robust configuration, reliable integrations and strong governance
- Act as the primary technical escalation point, resolving complex payroll system issues and leading enhancements from investigation through to deployment
- Own and oversee BAU payroll system changes, including wage code updates and system configuration, ensuring changes are controlled, auditable and compliant
- Partner with ERP teams and external vendors to deliver system performance, issue resolution and roadmap alignment
- Lead payroll’s contribution to major system and technical projects, including requirements definition, testing, implementation, change management and transition into BAU
- Ensure payroll systems support legislative compliance, audit readiness and risk mitigation, including superannuation, payroll tax and other statutory obligations
- Drive process improvement and automation, identifying smarter ways of working that improve efficiency, reduce risk and enhance employee experience
- Build technical capability across the payroll team through coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing
This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferrable skills and experiences, including:
- 3-5 years' experience in payroll technical or functional roles, with a track record of leading system projects and initiatives
- Advanced end-to-end payroll systems thinking, with the ability to analyse complex system interdependencies
- Strong leadership and influencing capability, with experience mentoring team members and working collaboratively across functions
- Advanced skills in iChris/Chris21is a required, experience with Workday and/or Deputy is highly regarded
- Proven experience leading payroll system changes end-to-end, from design and testing through to implementation and BAU handover
- Strong understanding of Australian payroll legislation, awards and compliance requirements
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly
- High attention to detail, discretion and a strong commitment to payroll accuracy and data integrity
- Advanced Excel and reporting skills
