About the role

We’re seeking a Payroll Functional Consultant to play a pivotal role in shaping and safeguarding the technical integrity of our payroll systems. As a senior technical leader within the Payroll team, you’ll take ownership of the end-to-end payroll systems landscape, ensuring accuracy, compliance and scalability while supporting a high performing payroll function.

This is a hands-on role that blends deep payroll systems expertise with leadership and influence. You’ll partner closely with the Head of Payroll, ERP technical teams and key stakeholders across People & Culture, Finance and Legal to deliver system enhancements, manage complex investigations and drive continuous improvement.

As our Payroll Functional Consultant, you’ll contribute to lasting and positive changes that shape the future of our cities and communities. It’s meaningful, challenging, and exciting work.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Act as the primary technical escalation point, resolving complex payroll system issues and leading enhancements from investigation through to deployment
  • Own and oversee BAU payroll system changes, including wage code updates and system configuration, ensuring changes are controlled, auditable and compliant
  • Partner with ERP teams and external vendors to deliver system performance, issue resolution and roadmap alignment
  • Lead payroll’s contribution to major system and technical projects, including requirements definition, testing, implementation, change management and transition into BAU
  •  Ensure payroll systems support legislative compliance, audit readiness and risk mitigation, including superannuation, payroll tax and other statutory obligations
  • Drive process improvement and automation, identifying smarter ways of working that improve efficiency, reduce risk and enhance employee experience
  • Build technical capability across the payroll team through coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing

This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferrable skills and experiences, including:

  • 3-5 years' experience in payroll technical or functional roles, with a track record of leading system projects and initiatives
  • Advanced end-to-end payroll systems thinking, with the ability to analyse complex system interdependencies
  • Strong leadership and influencing capability, with experience mentoring team members and working collaboratively across functions
  • Advanced skills in iChris/Chris21is a required, experience with Workday and/or Deputy is highly regarded
  • Proven experience leading payroll system changes end-to-end, from design and testing through to implementation and BAU handover
  • Strong understanding of Australian payroll legislation, awards and compliance requirements
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly
  • High attention to detail, discretion and a strong commitment to payroll accuracy and data integrity
  • Advanced Excel and reporting skills

If you meet some of these requirements, but not all, we encourage you to submit your application.

With a career at Transurban, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits, including:

  • A range of flexible working and leave options, including the option to purchase an additional six weeks of leave each year
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave (regardless of gender or carer status), with no waiting period, with Superannuation paid during unpaid leave as well
  • Learning and development opportunities to support your career interests
  • Health and wellbeing support—access to Headspace and our EAP program, wellness facilities, and more
  • Share offers and insurance benefits
  • Social activities, community give-back programs and paid volunteer days

We offer a range of flexible working and leave options, so you can balance your work and life commitments and interests. Have a conversation with us about how this could work for you.
