Compensation and Benefits:
- Compensation: Starting wage $23.50 - $24.68, adjusted based on experience
- Benefits: Seasonal position eligible for a season pass for employee/dependents and privileges at several other resorts. Several discount programs (i.e. food & beverage, retail/rental, tickets, etc.) also available.
Job Summary:
The Hill Chief is responsible for coordinating and supervising daily patrol operations for a specific mountain or other designated skiing/riding areas and performing all the regular duties of a patroller. These duties include monitoring mountain areas for injured, reckless, lost skiers and skiing hazards, providing first aid and other necessary assistance to skiers, enforcing the Skier Responsibility Code, and performing various trail maintenance tasks.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Supervise patrollers in designated area
- Patrols assigned mountain areas regularly to ensure that all trails are properly marked.
- Identify injured, lost, out-of-control, and reckless skiers.
- Identify existing or potential skiing hazards, monitor and report on weather/skiing conditions, skiing traffic, etc.
- Administer first aid to injured skiers- assess condition of and stabilize patient, render appropriate treatment (i.e. splinting, sling and swathe, etc.), stabilize, and transport to base in a toboggan
- Assist lost or out-of-control skiers in returning to a manageable trail or lift. Transport skiers who are frightened or have lost or damaged equipment or minor injuries to base by snowmobile or toboggan. Answer questions, give directions, etc.
- Stop reckless skiers and enforce company skiing safety regulations, including taking appropriate disciplinary action
- Perform a variety of trail maintenance tasks: check trails for hazards, missing signs, etc., put up signs and mark hazards, cut brush, pack down and shovel snow, put up fences, close trails when necessary
- Perform trail closing procedures, patrol all heavily traveled trails and all other trails if possible
- Assist in lift evacuation
- Assist in training and overseeing the work of less experienced rescue workers. Provide general emergency, first aid, and rescue training for other company personnel
- Search for missing people and equipment
- Patrol organized racing activities or other special skiing events
- Complete accident reports and assist in preparation of other documentation of accidents
- Assist in maintaining tools and equipment used in rescue and trail maintenance work and assist in maintaining base first aid facilities.
- Stand by awaiting emergency calls
- Always provide superior service to our customers (internal and external). Follow the Resort Etiquette Guidelines while interacting with the guests and respond to all guests in a courteous, efficient manner
- Perform other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Must have a basic education (high school).
- Must have excellent skiing/riding skills, Outdoor Emergency Care and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (EMT highly desirable), two to three years of patrol experience and training, the ability to direct and coordinate the work of others, a solid understanding of mountain operations and procedures - or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired
- Broad base of technical first aid and rescue skills relevant to skiing, including lift evacuation, rope work, wilderness navigation, toboggan handling, splint application, and the like
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to deal with customers in a courteous, efficient, confident, and authoritative manner.
- Good basic reading and writing skills
- Experience using a variety of hand and power tools used in trail maintenance (hand saws, chain saws, and the like)
- Ability to direct and coordinate the work of others

Skills Required
