Pay Range:

Under general direction, assists the pathologists in preparing and grossing anatomical specimens for routine histology testing and staining.Job Responsibilities and Requirements:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assigns priorities and batches of the specimens.
- Trims, labels, processes and preserves specimens.
- Provides gross dictation of surgical tissue specimens under direct supervision of surgical pathologist.
- Reviews gross dictation and slides prior to giving slides to the pathologist.
- Disposes of surgical tissue when appropriate.
- Prepares and maintains surgical tissues by properly registering accessioning, labeling and ensuring adequate fixation.
- Prepares frozen sections by labeling, cutting, staining and preserving the specimens.
- Photographs specimens as needed.
- Assists the Radiologist and Pathologist in collection of fine needle aspirate specimens.
- Assures that working supplies are adequate.
- Files, rotates and transfers surgical slides and paraffin blocks.
- May perform administrative and clerical duties as needed.
- Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on courses in anatomy and physiology or equivalent years of experience and education

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
- Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
- Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
- Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
- Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
- Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
- Rare climbing.
