JOB SUMMARY:

Jefferson County Attorney's Office is seeking a well-qualified Paralegal Supervisor. This role is responsible for overseeing, managing, and participating in providing administrative and paraprofessional support to attorneys in preparation for legal proceedings (e.g., litigation, prosecution). Incumbents participate in and oversee research using legal databases and resources, investigating legal claims made against Jefferson County, preparing documentation for court cases, and communicating case information to involved parties (e.g., witnesses, attorneys, opposing parties, city representatives). Paralegal Supervisors manage all administrative functions within the department and work almost exclusively in an office setting using standard office equipment (e.g., computer, phone, copier). Incumbents provide supervision to all paralegals and other administrative staff.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position.

  • Work experience as a paralegal or in legal services.

  • Experience as a lead worker (i.e., assigning and reviewing work tasks, facilitating training, and providing feedback).

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Coordinates with attorneys, opposing parties, witnesses, City departments, the City Council, and the public to support case development, exchange information, and facilitate trial proceedings.

  • Investigates claims and complaints by interviewing witnesses, documenting incident sites, gathering evidence, analyzing legal sources, monitoring related cases, and preparing summaries to support litigation and minimize liability.

  • Oversees trial preparation and execution by drafting pleadings, preparing and summarizing depositions, assembling trial notebooks and witness files, coordinating witness and expert appearances, organizing and managing exhibits, supporting jury selection, and assisting attorneys throughout trial.

  • Performs legal research and analysis by reviewing statutes, case law, rules, and procedures to inform case strategy and ensure compliance with applicable laws.

  • Manages legal documentation by drafting correspondence, affidavits, and factual sections of motions; serving, filing, and producing documents; and maintaining accurate and complete case records for all relevant parties (e.g., court, clients, attorneys) to prepare court cases for trial.

  • Supervises staff by assigning and directing work, monitoring performance, providing feedback and training, addressing personnel issues, and participating in staffing and disciplinary processes to ensure efficient and effective operations.

  • Maintains and updates case files and document databases by tracking deadlines and legal holds, ensuring compliance with public-records laws and court rules, updating case-management systems, and preparing logs and records for accessibility and accuracy.

  • Manages all aspects of discovery by reviewing requests, gathering responsive documents, drafting responses and motions, preparing privilege logs, coordinating evidence review, issuing discovery requests, analyzing opposing documents, and addressing deficiencies with counsel to ensure timely and complete compliance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. Job may also involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting and involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
