RESPONSIBILITIES
- Legal Research and Analysis
- Conducts comprehensive legal research on Federal and State statutes, regulations, directives, and judicial decisions using government-provided legal databases
- Analyzes and summarizes research findings, case law, and medical/factual records to assist attorneys in preparing legal opinions, memoranda, and case strategies
- Investigates facts and gathers evidence for cases, administrative and criminal investigations, and civilian personnel actions
- Case and File Management
- Creates, organizes, and maintains a system of records for all case files, investigations, and legal matters in both physical and electronic formats
- Tracks case deadlines, statutes of limitations, and suspense dates for reports, filings, and discovery
- Develops and maintains internal tracking systems and databases for documents, evidence, investigations, administrative law matters, and training
- Document Drafting and Preparation
- Drafts legal memoranda, reports of investigation, summary transcripts, and advisory opinions
- Drafts pleadings, motions, and discovery requests and responses for litigation
- Drafts correspondence to clients, opposing counsel, and other government agencies
- Drafts responses to Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act requests
- Prepares weekly, monthly, and quarterly case reports
- Litigation and Administrative Hearing Support
- Assists attorneys in preparing for trials and administrative hearings
- Organizes and manages exhibits, trial notebooks, administrative hearing notebooks, and witness files
- Summarizes administrative transcripts, witness testimony, and other discovery materials to identify key information
- Administrative and Program Support
- Serves as the initial point of contact for clients and visitors, providing knowledgeable assistance and directing inquiries to appropriate legal staff
- Provides notary services as required
- Assists in the management and organization of the law library and legal publications
- Drafts correspondence
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a paralegal, with a strong preference for experience in a federal government or military legal office. Experience with administrative law is highly desired.
- Demonstrated proficiency in legal research using LexisNexis, and proficiency with the
- Microsoft Office suite. Excellent written and oral communication skills are mandatory.
EDUCATION
- Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies or similar degree. Bachelor's and/or a paralegal certificate (highly desired)
- Must be a certified Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Virginia within 90 days of contract start date.
